What would you wear to a large/formal wedding in Italy in July?

I really am in need of some inspiration for an outfit for my brother's wedding. Venue is gorgeous castle in Tuscany.

I'm late-thirties, 5'9", size 8 and very pale - I don't cope all that well in the heat (nor the cold, but presumably that isn't going to be a problem) so am slightly concerned about sweat.

What would you choose if you were me? I don't even know where to begin looking - there's just too much choice! I'm also not very stylish and lack confidence in my decisions, tending to stick to the same safe styles.

Budget is flexible.

What time of day? Many are often in the evening so guests wear black tie type outfits/evening dresses.

ohthejoys21 · 15/04/2024 16:22

There's a stunning pale blue butterfly print Stella McCartney dress this season. (Don't know how to link) You could wear it every summer as a nice sundress dressed down with a cropped denim jacket.

Chattywatty · 15/04/2024 16:25

RIXO

Mumaway · 15/04/2024 16:27

I went a wedding in Capri. I wore a floaty but strappy maxi dress to the main event and reception with a big straw hat, I had a broderie cocktail dress for the next day beach party with gold flat sandals with a hold-it-all in high waisted bikini and sarong. It was pretty warm!

generally weddings in Italy are VERY formal
and not as much flesh on show as in England. Also Italians tend to wear monochrome colours and not big patterns and wear floor length dresses.

Of course if all guests are English might change the constellation of outfits!
i would hire an expensive dress https://www.hurrcollective.com/edits/wedding-guest-outfits

what colours do you like/suit you?

Mixed outfits when i went to one (church and 5 star hotel) certainly not full evening dress though more midi dresses on the women and linen/lighter suits on men, some trousers and blazers look

FormerlySpeckledyHen · 15/04/2024 16:50

What colours suit you OP?

Joolsin · 15/04/2024 17:01

It's going to be very hot, op. I bought some super strength stop sweating stuff for a wedding in Italy in September. Stopped my underarms sweating, but I hadn't thought about the rest of me as I'm not normally a sweaty person - a most peculiar feeling to have completely dry underarms whilst the rest of me was dripping!!! 😂

I recommend you go with floaty natural fabrics, either linen or cotton. And get a pattern so the sweat marks won't show up as they would with colour blocks.

Thanks for the replies - lots to look at already! In terms of colours, I'm pale with blonde hair and blue eyes. I love pastels, cornflower blues, bold pinks and oranges. There isn't much I don't like, though not a big fan of very bold blues or purples. Yellow doesn't suit me, though I love it.

The guests are all/mostly British and Indian, and neither side are especially religious or overly conservative. Whilst the invitation specifies 'Wedding Formal' I get the feeling almost anything goes (which again, gives me too many options!).

I'd go for something light & floaty, this is lovely - https://www.reiss.com/style/su184466/k92229#k92229

Thank you - this is lovely and definitely something I'd wear and feel comfortable in. I wonder if I should be brave and go for something slightly out of my comfort zone, though!

Sara Roka is an Italian company that's great for dressy dresses, and would be very chic for a summer wedding. A shop local to me stocks them, but I'm in rural west Devon. Warning: they don't come cheap!

reigsin · 15/04/2024 17:47

@Spirallingdownwards ceremony is 3pm
@Bullshots Some of these are gorgeous! Thanks, I hadn't heard of DoubleJ before. I can definitely see lots I'd love to wear for the events the day before and after wedding.
@Chattywatty I do like this RIXO dress, though without the belt https://rixolondon.com/products/liberty-lilac-jewel
@TokyoSushi That is extremely pretty and the sort of thing I'd feel very comfortable in. I worry that the other guests will be looking very glam, though I might be wrong about that.

Liberty - Lilac Jewel

Liberty - Lilac Jewel

The RIXO Liberty midi dress is a lilac floral-pattern jacquard with fluttery cap sleeves, a crewneck, an empire waist, and a bias-cut skirt with a ruffled hem.

@ohthejoys21 I can't find it (yet). I'd love to see it, though I probably shouldn't be spending Stella McCartney money so maybe best I don't fall in love with it!

I know! I saw it in Harrods and couldn't justify it especially as haven't got a wedding. Better you don't see!Grin

WhatWouldYouDo33 · 15/04/2024 19:06

Too informal for a formal wedding in Italy. Screams “I am English”

TokyoSushi · 15/04/2024 20:21

Gosh @WhatWouldYouDo33 😄 I quite like it and wouldn't mind being identified as English! 😉

Goodwitchglenda · 15/04/2024 20:43

Dolce and Gabbana!!!!!!!!!
Vestiare has loads. Make sure it’s cotton, silk, or linen.
Red lipstick.
Big sunnies.
I’d also wear a large brimmed straw hat.

Try to find out if the other guests will be in evening clothes (common in Italy, but often weddings are later in the day than this one).

Whatever you wear, allow for sweat and mosquitos!

Saxendi · 15/04/2024 21:13

I found this at John Lewis & Partners. What do you think? https://www.johnlewis.com/sister-jane-moorland-maxi-dress-black/p111680801?tmad=c&tmcampid=7&sshare=jlappioss_Y29tLmFwcGxlLlVJS2l0LmFjdGl2aXR5LkNvcHlUb1Bhc3RlYm9hcmQ=

This is quite stylish looking with the halter neck and in natural fabric too!

angstridden2 · 15/04/2024 21:29

Went to English wedding in a Tuscan castle, it was blazing hot so wore a sleeveless silk dress and sandals, had a sun hat and took a cardi for the evening meal in the courtyard. Only the ceremony was uncomfortably hot, the rest was in shaded areas.

Ophy83 · 15/04/2024 23:00

Love this! Beautiful and cotton so it won't feel sticky!
