Which dress for my graduation?

I'll be attending my own (Masters) graduation ceremony next week and I'm torn about what to wear. I've got 3 options and I like them all but keen for opinions. I'm 49 and I've just shed 3 stone, still a size 14 (more 14-16 than 12-14) but feeling quite good about myself.

Option 1 - I love this green one but is it too clubby rather than formal?

Option 2 - the pink is a safe bet I think

Option 3 - this looks lovely on and is possibly my favourite dress but I wanted to avoid black as I prefer a contrast to the black gown.

Thanks!

Now that is miles better!

Flattering, a sensible length and a gorgeous colour.
Cardinal Red will go well with the Black gown with ivory trim.

That red dress is beautiful, great choice. Please let us know how you get on with it? If it came in black I'd be tempted to buy it myself for the same purpose... I might even still (but worried it'll clash with my red gown)

WONDERFUL!
It's lovely.

A beautiful colour , a flattering look and will go well with the black and ivory.

Also much more classic design.

Have a great day!

The pink and green are definately not suitable for this occasion just my opinion the black will look super 😀

Agh, they don't have black. Just red and green.

Are you getting your PhD?

I’m a lecturer so attend graduation ceremonies every year at my institution with my PhD robes on… my robes aren’t particularly flattering 😅 so always looking for a nice dress and shoes to help a wee bit!

OchonAgusOchonOh · 15/04/2024 14:25

The red dress is perfect, as are the shoes. I'm a lecturer and have seen so many students trip or stumble going up/down the steps at our graduation ceremonies because they are wearing insane shoes.

Dd is graduating this year and the only thing I was really emphatic about when we were shopping for the graduation outfit was sensible heels. Thankfully she agrees and she also went for a more formal style dress rather than a clubby one. It's a formal occasion so clubby just looks wrong under the gown.

museumum · 15/04/2024 15:12

Yes. I think you've got it now. I see the students at my local university graduation every year as I work nearby and I really don't think that higher heels and shorter than knee-length skirts look good with the gown. They look a bit like kids playing dress-up. The mid-height heel and knee length or midi dress is definitely better.

I have to agree with @AprilComeSheWillWhenStreamsAreRipe and @BananaLambo on P3 and @OchonAgusOchonOh on this page.

Also agree with most that the dress in that last link, to the M&S dress, is the nicest / most appropriate for the occasion.
