I never condition my hair

Years ago, I heard a hairdresser say that it was pointless to condition your hair so I have never bothered since. I have long hair which gets greasy quickly but can get dry on the ends. I’m not sure conditioner makes much difference though and I haven’t missed it. Does anyone else not condition their hair?

I’m the opposite- never shampoo it (co-wash with conditioner only). Whatever works for your hair is best eh?

Morlandc · 13/04/2024 12:18

I don’t, sometimes I do a hair mask but more for fun than benefit. Yes I need to get out more.

I stopped conditioning my hair about 25 years ago. just couldn’t be bothered and didn’t think I the 2 minutes of slapping on a conditioner just to rinse it off again, would make a difference.

Around 5 years ago, a family member trained as a hairdresser and was horrified that I didn’t condition my hair and told me that this was the reason my hair was dry, brittle and thin.

I thought I’d give her advice a go as I want happy with my hair- it was much thinner than when I was younger-

fast fward 5 years my hair is much healthier and thicker than ever.
I am now sold on conditioner- not any cheap one but salon products are worth the extra/it defo worked for me

I have very fine straight hair. If I don't condition it, I can't get a comb through it and it goes flyaway and static when I blow dry it.

My DD has beautiful long thick hair and never needs it.
It must depend on your hair type.

I only condition if I've been swimming a few times. I imagine I'd do it more if my hair was dyed. Maybe try it to see if it makes a difference?

50Fifty · 13/04/2024 12:35

I have thick, naturally curly hair and conditioner is a must otherwise I can't get a brush through it.

Elephantswillnever · 13/04/2024 12:37

I think it depends on your hair/ lifestyle. I condition but I swim in a pool so that’s quite drying. Collar bone length and I don’t often use heat so fairly good generally.

TheWeeDonkeyFella · 13/04/2024 12:48

Yes I always have (in fact used two conditioners when younger which sounds daft now - remember Vidal Sassoon 3-step anyone?) but I have coloured hair and use a hairdryer and usually straighteners too most days. If I had hair that could be left to air dry I'd possibly try skipping conditioner.

*Edited to say sorry, misread your post asking for those that don't use conditioner!

Yes I usually air dry my hair and leave it loose and wavy. My teen dc has thick curly hair and they have to condition it or it is a mass of frizz.

As my hair is shorter now, a graduated bob and it's highlighted, I only use conditioner or a treatment once a week.

My hair goes flat if it's over conditioned.

I don't use high street hair products any more and my hair is better for it, plus my hairdresser is a good cut and colour expert.

Morlandc · 13/04/2024 12:55

i don’t use any heat on my hair and don’t swim so I think it depends on your lifestyle also. Also some nutritional factors must come into play as my hair went very dull when anaemic.

LaWench · 13/04/2024 12:57

My mine is thick and wavy and needs conditioner.

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 13/04/2024 12:59

I don't condition it but I do use leave in treatments

NotStayingIn · 13/04/2024 13:03

I still use conditioner but I’ve stopped using a leave in serum or oil afterwards. I just let it air dry with nothing in it and that seems to work ok for me.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 13/04/2024 14:11

I don't either. I have thick, straight hair which used to be in a very severe bob. As cut was so good and hair is straight, towel dry, brush into place and leave was enough.

Hair is shoulder length now and seems to have acquired a slight wave to it. But again, towel dry, brush through, quick blast to dry, but not style. I did use conditioner briefly because my hair seemed to be dropping a lot but it just flattened it and weighed it down.

thecanadianloon · 13/04/2024 15:37

My hair tangles if I don't keep it tied back (and even then it gets knots). I mean I don't have to use conditioner but 1) it would take much longer to brush 2)it hurts like Billio! However some conditioners (the ones more like cream) are useless and don't help detangle, so I only use certain ones.

merryhouse · 13/04/2024 15:46

I haven't used conditioner at home for several years now, but I have a bottle that lives in MiL's guest shower room.

We're in a soft water area (hardly ever add salt to the dishwasher, never need to descale the kettle) and MiL has hard water (not quite the floaty bits in tea levels, but definitely not soft). I discovered that it makes a big difference.

Ginkypig · 13/04/2024 18:09

With long hair it’s only the ends that need conditioned anyway.

i very rarely do as I forget and only remember once my hair is dry by which time it’s too late! but I’ve got a spray leave in conditioner I use after I come out the shower.

when I remember it 1 or 2 pumps into my hand then cover both palms and run through the ends. As in below shoulders to the ends
