To feel such pressure not to wear skinny jeans!

I was pregnant last year so I think when you’re pregnant it’s like you almost take a side step out of the whole trends and fashion thing for a bit, to live in whatever fits. When I’ve came back into normal clothes I feel like someone’s sent out a memo (not even recently either) to tell everyone they must go out of their way to wear mom, straight or flared jeans.

My go-to outfit for going to baby and toddler things was always just skinny jeans and a shacket or oversized shirt. It seems like my entire wardrobe was based on looser top half, tighter bottom half. It was jeans or running leggings. Now when I go anywhere, if I feel like I can’t wear my leggings I end up spending so long trying to find anything that goes together. I end up wearing a floral midi dress of some description with trainers for any sort of more dressy occasion with friends, just because I don’t know what else to wear. I caved and got a pair of mom jeans a few months ago, I don’t even think they look nice but had no option, it was as if I blinked and we’d all gone off them too though. I’ve got no idea what’s happening, what goes with what, who’s at the front of all of this that we seem to be copying every 2 seconds but can we stop.. it feels like I’m back at school 😩😩😂 This is all building up because I have another occasion this weekend where I’m going to go round this whole dilemma again!

Also the pointy shoes.. it’s like everyone must wear them on a night out too. At Christmas it was them with tights everywhere you looked. I haven’t got pointy heels now, have I to run out and buy some or is that about to change again?!

I get the concept of this being how trends work but I just liked my safe outfits I could rotate without committing any fashion crimes

Just wear what you want. You don’t have to follow every trend, stand tall, if you look confident, no one will notice if you’re not feeling it. Life’s not about clothes!

NotCute · 12/04/2024 00:33

Wear what you want and feel comfortable and presentable in. Unless you are v young nobody expects you to be in mom jeans.

Are joggers your thing? Loose joggers are a fashionable alternative to mom jeans and cheap as chips. Although not for people who.prfer a less casual aesthetic.

iloveshetlandponies · 12/04/2024 00:36

I hate mom jeans

It's like they're designed to only look good on the most perfect figure and the youngest coolest women. in like an ironic way oh look at meeee I still look fucking amazing even in these fucking hideous unflattering jeans

I still wear skinny jeans! They suit me more than any other styles

I see loads of others wearing them and looking good in them, and in Grazia last week it said they were back 🎉!! I think they're a classic anyway.

Montgomerymmoose · 12/04/2024 00:38

It's a myth that skinny Jeans are out . We seem to be going through an anything goes period at the moment for jeans . There are all styles in the shops, something for everyone. That's a good thing , I think .

PollyPeep · 12/04/2024 00:38

I'm with you! I'm trying the whole looser jeans trend and it just looks so sloppy on me! Works well for younger people but I just look like a bag lady. Especially with a coat over the top 😱

Notcontent · 12/04/2024 00:54

I like slim, cigarette style jeans as an alternative to skinny jeans, but have decided that anything more baggy only looks good with a T-shirt tucked in - so only a summer option.

Me teen Dd who is tall and slim and can wear anything has some baggy, wider leg jeans that she looks good in, but even she has decided that some of the straight styles currently around are just not flattering.

ditto long denim skirts - only look good with a vest top!

suki1964 · 12/04/2024 00:55

Ive never not worn skinny jeans, my legs are my best feature so why would I hide them in baggy flappy things?

Actually today I was looking at a pair of loose fitting linen trousers for work, both my legs fitted in one leg !!!

I have no arse and skinny legs, mom jeans just make my arse look as if its at the back of my knees

Im a busty petite, skinny all the way

Are pointy shoes around again? I live in a back water and its all flatforms , trainers and boots ( and yes you will have to prise the boots of my dead body, I wear them year in and out )

Luckingfovely · 12/04/2024 01:06

You 'caved' into buying a pair of jeans that you didn't like and don't suit you? With the best will in the world, you need to stop worrying about other people's opinions and wear what looks good on you. (Yes, I know it's hard finding your way after kids, but this is Not The Way).

A confession, in solidarity: I bought a pair of hyped 'cigarette' jeans recently. Late teen DD said they looked awful and I look much better in my normal skinnies.

Short, boobs, skinny legs. Apparently it's the only thing that works? So be it. I'm happy with that.

BruFord · 12/04/2024 02:13

On DD’s advice, I’ve bought a couple of pairs of bell bottom jeans and I have to say that they do look fine as an alternative to skinny. Tighter at the top with a slight flare.

I can’t be doing with the huge wide-legged ones, I’d feel (and I’m sure I’d look) daft in them!

I haven’t been an able to get on board with wider legged jeans or trousers at all. They don’t suit my shape.

I was never a massive skinny jeans fan (although I do like leggings for a sporty, weekend look), so I have just continued to wear the styles that suit me best (slim/straight jeans, tapered trousers) regardless of fashion.

To be honest, I don’t think any jeans style is unfashionable right now. I live in London and work in a fairly young, fashionable area, and I see every style of jeans being worn. Yes, there does seem to be a uniform of wide legged jeans and short, boxy tops for the very young. But other than that, anything seems to go. Plenty of skinnies about still.

DappledThings · 12/04/2024 08:00

I have no idea what jeans are "in". I wear the ones I'm comfy in. It's not compulsory to care what other people think you should be wearing.

And yes I know this is S&B and 90% of what is in here baffles me so I never visit it directly but this one came up in Active. And it still baffles me so once in a while I think coming on to reiterate trends aren't compulsory if you don't like then is valid even in the hallowed S&B corridors.

muddyford · 12/04/2024 08:02

I never wear the bootcut/flared/wide legged stuff. Straight, slim or tapered for me. Where is the pressure coming from? Wear what you like and feel comfortable in.

I feel this too - look around and even younger girls are still wearing skinnies and leggings as well as loose fit styles. I think shackets have right been replaced with sweatshirts, hoodies and oversized blazers though and cardigans may be creeping back into favour.

sorrynotathome · 12/04/2024 08:13

Given how you phrased your title, I’m going to say YABU. Just where what you want.

Misthios · 12/04/2024 08:13

Who is pressuring you? Only yourself. It is far more important that you are comfortable and like what you are wearing than blindly following what someone else has decided is fashionable. If you like skinny jeans, wear them.

soupfiend · 12/04/2024 08:16

Do people really think like this?

ArtyWren · 12/04/2024 08:17

OP just wear what you want. You don’t have to follow the fashion herd, just do your own thing. People wearing things that they look awful in just because it’s “in”, because it’s the latest fashion trend, and not wearing what suits them- why?

PersephonePomegranate23 · 12/04/2024 08:23

There was a big hoo-ha about Kate Moss wearing skinnies the other day, heralding the return of skinny jeans.

In reality, while skinnies might not have been the height of fashion, they never went anywhere. Shops have still stocked them, not just M&S etc. But I've seen them in Zara and River Island et al.

Wear what you like and feel good in.

TuesdayWhistler · 12/04/2024 08:24

Forget fashions and trends, go for style and comfort...
And only you can decide your style and what you find comfortable.

All these trends and fashion's etc I reckon they only serve to make certain people wealthy:
clothing manufacturers and retailers.
magazine publishers.
designers.

they're not there to find outfits that flatter and fit you, or that make you look and feel good, they're just there to sell you tat you don't need.

Style, never goes out of fashion. 🤪

Runningbird43 · 12/04/2024 08:29

I hate skinny jeans and have never worn them. I don’t think they’re particularly flattering either. Same with high waisted jeans.

it could be what your eye is used to seeing you in, and wearing looser styles your brain thinks you look bigger.

try going back to classic Levi’s or men’s cut. Much comfier.

ivs · 12/04/2024 08:29

Wear what the fuck you feel good in - seriously!

Divebar2021 · 12/04/2024 08:33

I don’t think this is about jeans I think it’s about general weirdness about being older perhaps or becoming a mother or a changing body shape which is throwing you off your game. It’s possible to find a personal style which skates close to some trends but which feels authentic to you. You can pick and choose the bits you want to partake in the way you chose skinny jeans and shackets in the first place. You could try the “ 3 word method” popularised by Allison Borstein ( may not have been initially devised by her) to try and determine what your style aims are.
