Make up which doesn't curdle on top of SPF day cream

Magicpaintbrush · 08/04/2024 12:08

I'm hoping somebody will have some advice on this as it's driving me mad. I'm using spf 30 day cream underneath my make up - it looks flawless for a couple of hours but by lunchtime it has started to separate on my face, looking all sort of speckly and curdled. I have to wear spf protection as I'm on medication that makes my skin sensitive to the sun, and I'm not so great with remembering to moisturise at night, so I prefer to do it in the morning.

Does anybody have any recommendations for an spf day cream, foundation, concealer and pressed powder that work as a combo without separating on your face? My budget is very tight unfortunately, so I'd be looking for items under £10 each. I do notice that the spf day cream doesn't absorb well, BUT I've yet to find one which does, so it sits on your skin greasily like sun cream, not ideal. I think finding a spf day cream that absorbs better might be the key but I don't have the budget to buy lots to try them out.

Currently am using: L'Oreal Revitalift spf30 day cream
Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer
L'Oreal True Match Foundation
Rimmel Stay Matte Powder

Clearly this combo is not working!!! Please help me wise Mumsnetters...

Do you mean your skin is so dry the makeup is sitting on top, or that it's pilling off?

You should use a separate SPF (50 is recommended by dermatologists-) from your moisturizer as we simply don't put enough moisturizer on iyswim? (Two fingers length of sunscreen is recommended)

It could be silicones in the moisturizer that's making the make up pill?

This happened to me too. After trialing a few options, I'm now using Kiehls everyday moisturiser (SPF 30), YSL blur primer then I mix Oskia tinted serum with Lancôme ultra wear foundation. Finish off with Charlotte Tilbury airbrush flawless setting spray.

It's pricey but my skin has never looked so good and my makeup stays in place all day.

GingerIsBest · 08/04/2024 14:24

I am not a big fan of the l'oreal SPF under make up.

I think you need to experiment with different SPF day creams. There are loads around at reasonable prices:

Boots does a vitamin C one with SPF, I think factor 50, that's quite good.
I use an ELF ultra moisturising, factor 25. I also have an ELF SPF primer that works well.
The Cerave moisteriser with SPF is very popular. I didn't love it, but lots of people do.
The Nivea day creams mostly come in version with SPF and I've always found them effective.
The Inkey List does a SPF that sits over moisteriser that's quite good.

ASighMadeOfStone · 08/04/2024 14:31

No idea why I keep repeating myself, I do apologise!
I like Garnier SPF 50 for the face, it's really hydrating and cheap as chips!

Magicpaintbrush · 08/04/2024 15:20

Thank you for your replies, I appreciate it. I will look into the products suggested, though unfortunately the suggestions by EnglishBreakfastTea are really unaffordable for me, otherwise I would love to try those 😢. I know that you get what you pay for but I just can't stretch to that. I would love to buy up a whole bunch of new products and try them all out and see what works best, but that's not possible, so hopefully some of the suggestions on here will narrow it down a bit for me. I don't ever expect to achieve a high end make up look but I would really like to avoid the Bride of Frankenstein if possible. This morning I skipped the foundation altogether and tried some cc cream and concealer, followed by powder - same problem. I'm wondering if I start by changing my moisturiser and powder, maybe that will help.

Yes - change the moisteriser/spf first. It's the easiest to change and most likely to be the culprit.

You've had good suggestions for SPFs with moisterisers on here already. Another cheap one is Simple. I like many of their products but haven't tried the SPF moisterisers specifically so while I'd guess they're good, I can't 100% guarantee.

Another one that's a bit pricier but still on the lower end that I often see people raving about is the la roche possay moisterisers with SPF.

LifeInAHamsterWheel · 08/04/2024 16:35

I think that with needing an SPF on your face due to medication you should use a specific facial SPF rather than relying on a day cream that has some SPF in it. As someone already said, that won't give you enough protection at all.

I'd definitely recommend this one it's really good and not expensive. After I've washed my face in the morning, I apply hyaluronic acid serum (The Inkey List one, again cheap as chips) then I apply a basic moisturiser (I love the Revolution Skincare ceramides one, again cheap!) while that's sinking in I do other stuff like brush my teeth, fix my hair etc. Then I apply the SPF and again let it sink in a few minutes before applying my makeup.

Garnier spf 50+ is something I can recommend.
Here is something that I follow:
Morning:
Using water to wash your face,
Sebamed clear face gel,
Garnier spf
Evening:
Cerave moisturizing cleanser,
Tretinoin (0.1) from skinorac
Sebamed clear facial gel

Magicpaintbrush · 08/04/2024 18:09

Thank you all so much, I really appreciate your advice. There are some really good suggestions here. I will take a look at these products. I definitely need to up my game with my skin care routine. I had assumed that if I did a separate spf and moisturiser that my face would be so caked in product my make up would just slide off. I know I need to moisturise more at night as well, it's just that I hate splashing water on my face when I'm tired 😱. Maybe I need to trick my brain into thinking it's a pampering experience.

I use this Mua foundation on top of garner vitamin c with spf and it doesn't pill.its quite thin and a light to medium coverage and importantly really cheap! I've used it fir a few years now, I really rate it.

This stuff is great, acts like a light moisturiser even though it's not one. Lovely and silky with no greasiness.

If you're not looking after your skin at nighttime OP then you'll have no joy with it during the day! I don't splash water on my face, but I do massage in a balm cleanser and then wipe it off with face cloth that's been rinsed in hot water. The facecloth gives a slight exfoliation that is more gentle than using an actual exfoliator (I've got quite sensitive skin so have to be careful). Giving your skin a really good cleanse at night and then following that with a rich moisturiser might yield really good results for you! And you don't have to use expensive products either (I never do) but properly clean and well moisturised skin will immediately look better and you'll find SPF and makeup etc. will sit better on it.

ChocolateBiscuit2 · 08/04/2024 18:29

This was happening to me too. I then used just a plain moisturiser and a separate face SPF cream and mixed them together in my hand first and that seems to have stopped the problem

happytobemrsg · 08/04/2024 20:45

I wouldn’t wear a moisturiser which contains spf. You just don’t apply enough moisturiser to get the stated spf coverage, especially since you have sun sensitivity. La Roche Possay Anthelios is quite a good separate 50+ spf if you have the patience to wait a few minutes before applying makeup. It’s often on sale so you could get it close to your budget.

KeeeeeepDancing · 08/04/2024 21:46

A warm to hot clean facecloth is lovely at night on your skin! No splashing required!
Oil based cleanser, massage on, warm facecloth off. Night cream.

Then in the morning just the garnier spf 50 and your foundation. Done!

The facecloth is a gentle exfoliation each day, so your makeup should be smooth

Warm cloth on my face before going to sleep is a therapy!

I use the same one as Squirrelsnut. It sinks in really quickly and doesnt irritate my eyes. When I started on Skin and Me, it was a recommended suncream. It doesn’t appear to cause breakouts.

SausageRoll2020 · 10/04/2024 19:38

I've had a a similar issue before, I'd suggest changing the order round and apply a high SPF setting spray over your normal make up.
Uncomplikated is really good as is one by the Australian brand Ultra Violette.

Both are significantly more than £10 but I think you'll really struggle to find a product of the quality you need at that price.
