I need to find my waist!! What worked for you?

Not strictly 'beauty' but I have a complex history with anything labelled 'diet' so I am posting here instead.

I have a show (theatre) in October which will, in parts, involve slim fitting clothing. I am playing a professional sportswoman.

I also had a long proper look in the mirror and realised I need to get my act together! I am peri-menopausal, and have a very obvious apple shape. Some is possibly due to hormones, some is probably due to wine - one is obviously easier to omit than the other! Also, I am a Type 1 diabetic so cutting out things like carbs isn't that simple or foolproof! This also means that exercise such as running needs fuelling up first. Oh, and to ice the cake, I have a frozen shoulder...!

What has worked for you to look less round other than the obvious! I am open to any ideas at the moment, or might also lump them all together!

Colour block unitard might fulfil the requirements!😁

Thank you but I can't choose the outfit, I just have to try and make the body that goes in it look better!

What advice to the diabetic nurse bods give regarding fitness and losing weight etc?

Exercise will be good. Running isn't instant but does help the system just work better. Other than that work on posture and muscle tone. Pilates, callisthenics, gym work.

heyhohello · 07/04/2024 19:54

Oh and maybe a twitchy thing - electronic muscle toning device? Plus body brushing / massage.

OSAP · 07/04/2024 20:09

@heyhohello They advise pretty much what I'd do if I didn't have a painful frozen shoulder! I was having personal training sessions until six months ago but stopped it as I couldn't get enough out of it to justify the expense.

Following with interest. My waist to hip ratio must be about 1:1 …

Just remembered this influencer has got an offer code for a free trial with personal training app. She has had lots of injuries. They designed a program around them.

I found Lucy Wyndham-Reed on YouTube great for 10 minute exercises which worked.

Must get back into it...

Thank you - so much! X

Stationary Bike. Leslie Sansone does gentle walking videos on youtube.

Seainasive · 07/04/2024 21:25

Pilates. Trains the core muscles and helps define the waist.

Alternatively foundation garments? 😉

Hula hooping. Get a weighted hoop. Watch some YouTube tutorials work up to 20 minutes a day (or more if you don't get bored) when 20 minutes is easy, get a heavier hoop. Try and do both directions for an even curve.

bluebeardswife7 · 07/04/2024 21:27

Best exercise ever.

Cardio is obviously good for you and helps people lose fat, but I really recommend lifting weights. I have a ‘straight up and down’ shape naturally so have never really had a proper waist because I also have narrow hips. If I gain fat, it goes around my middle so I begin to look apple shaped.

When I used to go running, I was slim and light but still had a fair bit of fat on top. A few years later, I started lifting weights and my shape changed. I’m not particularly light and I’m not what you could call willowy or slender, but I’m strong and quite muscular and have low body fat %. I still don’t have a very slim waist because I’m not built that way (I also have quite square shoulders and a very wide ribcage!)

If you need to look like a sportswoman, I wouldn’t worry too much about having a waist- sportswomen look athletic. Lifting weights will help you look athletic and strong because you will have less body fat overall.

following!

ThatGutsyOrca · 07/04/2024 22:15

I am younger and an hourglass but too much wine in lockdown and I looked very bloated and apple shape. I don't have diabetes but what worked for to rediscover my waist was HIIT and pilates 5 times a week, cut out all alcohol and followed a 1500 calorie diet.
If you never had a small waist realistically then it's going to be surgery to change your shape however that is OTT to play an athlete as they tend to have wide waists, straight up and down body. Tiny waist is more if you're playing Barbie or Cinderella!

RunnyPaint · 08/04/2024 09:07

Cutting down on wine, being careful with portion sizes, and making "sensible" snacking choices worked for me to lose weight (mostly tummy, but also slightly slimmer elsewhere). I have tried more prescriptive methods, but find them harder to stick to as I rebel against the (admittedly self-imposed) regime 🙄 I'm not diabetic, but wonder if this general approach can fit with your more specific dietary needs. I also now do intermittent fasting, but not sure how that fits with diabetes advice.
