Wedding with an "informal" dress code. Help!

Got an invite to a wedding, arty types saying it's a relaxed, casual dress code. Late May.

Gutted not to be able to get my bling out! But what on earth is a casual dress code for a wedding? Jeans and a t-shirt?! Painter's overalls?

The classic, jeans and a nice top! 👌

Is it 2002? 😂

we went to a wedding with a relaxed dress code a few years ago. People were everything from smart jeans and a nice shirt to completely blinged up. Probably means dress how you like.

I would assume it meant you’re not expected to go the whole hog with smart ‘wedding guest’ attire including fascinators and hats.

Yeah but what's the alternative? Leave off the hat? Baseball cap and Reiss frock? 😂

I’d wear a summer day dress and flats. Like a “smart casual” bbq party. No killer heels, no hats and fascinators and no evening wear.

HappierTimesAhead · 06/04/2024 22:43

A midi-dress and trainers

MarshmallowsOnToast · 06/04/2024 22:44

I would go summer dress & sandals

heyhohello · 07/04/2024 09:50

Summer dress, flat sandals, straw hat if it's sunny.

AuntieMarys · 07/04/2024 10:03

Always a jumpsuit for me. Wide legs, flats.

AuntieStella · 07/04/2024 10:14

I'd wear a favourite dress (not a full-on smart one) and no hat (unless it went well with a hippy type straw hat of the sort you might wear on an ordinary sunny day) and ballet flats.

I wouldn't wear jeans (they'd probably be OK, though) or any form of athleisure (including baseball caps!)

user14832431 · 07/04/2024 10:33

OK thanks for the advice. I hate floral summer dresses (I'm always cold and they make me feel exposed) and I've got one quite dressy dress that I wanted to wear. I feel old and ugly and was looking forward to getting dressed up for the first time since before covid 😭

Agree it does leave room for interpretation! Relaxed to me, means ‘wear what you feel comfortable in’ . Casual = daywear, surely?

I would wear nice trousers or smartish jeans (a newer pair) and a pretty top or blouse. Ballet flats or sandals. Or a summer day dress.

Keepingongoing · 07/04/2024 10:44

Sorry OP, crossed posts. I understand wanting to get dressed up for the first time in 4+ years! Could you wear the dressy dress, but skip the other bits that would be full- on smart wedding, like the hat?

MarshmallowsOnToast · 07/04/2024 10:46

Could we see the dress you are wanting to wear?

MyBigFatGreekSalad · 07/04/2024 10:51

I'd go for a shirred midi dress like this with sandals/ trainers.

Nobody's child are great for smart/casual dresses!

Op post the dress you want to wear and get opinions on how to relax the look

HappierTimesAhead · 07/04/2024 11:41

If you wore it with flats (sandals would probably work best) and wear your hair down and simple earrings (or even hoops for a Boho look) then I think it will work.

user14832431 · 07/04/2024 16:13

Thanks, yes I could try it with sandals. I think trainers would look too out of place!

I would aim for a summery outfit that I’d wear out for a nice lunch/drinks. So not too weddingy but still lovely. That dress you linked is gorgeous and I was eyeing it up recently!

We said the dress code for our wedding was relaxed or whatever you like, and we had posh frocks and suits but also people in dungarees, trainers and jeans. Everyone was comfortable and that was all that mattered.
