So upset with my hair!

YesItsMeYesItsMe · 05/04/2024 08:50

Since having my daughter 2 years ago my hair has been so fizzy and dry and straw like.

I’ve tried:

Curly Girl a couple of times, because people have said if you have frizz it means there’s a curl pattern. I found the whole thing far too much effort and left my hair so heavy and lank and I don’t have time to tweak the processes.

Therefore am reluctant to try Merwave or any other special products actually as not convinced I’m wavy anyway as they haven’t worked in the past.

Oiling my hair- tried that last night and it looks like this today and feels horrible like I need to wash it again. Yet so dry at the ends!

Went to the hairdressers for the first time in about a decade a few weeks ago, and she just said ‘yeah that looks hormonal’ but no advice. She did blow out my hair and I felt nice for the first time in years! But don’t want to do that all the time because of heat damage?

If I straighten (don’t want to because 1. effort and 2. heat) it still looks straw like at the ends.

I keep my hair up all the time because it’s so annoying, I have chopped it to a bob a few times lately but I do prefer having long hair. But not when it’s frizzy. And the bobs were frizzy anyway and I looked like a mushroom.

I feel like I’m not asking for much, I am even totally happy with my greys that are coming through as long as I can be FRIZZ FREE!!! I don’t even mind if I’m stick straight of wavy, just NO FRIZZ!!

Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

So upset with my hair!

Maybe try a spray in conditioner on the bottom half scrunch it so the curls show a bit and let it dry naturally.

Did it fall out a lot after birth? It looks like lots of shorter, newer growth poking through the long hair.

EveryKneeShallBow · 05/04/2024 09:18

Mine isn’t long like yours, but I am old and shrivelled. I use The Ordinary hyaluronic acid overnight, Redken bonding shampoo and conditioner and eSalon weekly retreat hair masque once a week. My friends compliment the condition of my hair. Hope this helps.

CreateYourOwnUsername · 05/04/2024 09:21

It looks like it maybe hasn't been cut in a while? That could be the problem maybe. Mine goes like that when I leave it too long between cuts. But mine has always been quite frizzy.

I get that you want long hair, but maybe you need to get it trimmed more frequently.

MrsRoyCropper · 05/04/2024 09:26

I have similar hair texture and I use a Brazilian/keratin hair straightening treatment on it. Its very expensive to have done at the salon so I buy a kit from amazon and do it myself. It really smoothes the texture and totally eliminates frizz. You do need to use a salt free shampoo and conditioner to maintain it, again I buy from amazon. Its a lengthy process to apply but hugely worth it for the improvement in texture. Lasts me about 3 months if I avoid salt products and chlorine.

MissyB1 · 05/04/2024 09:39

I was about to post a similar thread! Although I'm mid 50s so my issue is menopausal frizzy hair. The whole texture of my haor has totally chnaged and is so frizy. What shampoo and conditioner are you using OP? I've just been browsing smoothing shampoos, trying to decide what to buy.

It was cut maybe 4 weeks ago at a salon and other than that I trim it myself regularly.

You don’t have curly hair which is why CGM products didn’t suit your hair. You may have wavy hair though!

I follow the Charlotte Rich wavy method ( FB group) and adding protein drops to my products has made a huge difference to mine. Getting the balance between protein and moisture correct seems to be the key to banishing frizz and that horrible straw like feeling.

desperatehousewife2 · 05/04/2024 09:48

@MrsRoyCropper can I please ask you what the name of the kit you get from Amazon is? Is it easy to apply and do you have to be a whizz at blow drying?

Sorry OP, no real suggestions about your hair, it looks lovely to me!

CreateYourOwnUsername · 05/04/2024 10:02

I think we have similar hair op. I didn't have any luck with CGM or Merwave products (total waste of money for me unfortunately).

I did find Aveno shampoo and conditioner quite good.

I have had a few keratin treatments at a salon, but I didn't really like it. My hair is quite fine though, "but a lot of it". My mum had thicker hair with a real curl to it and she loved having hers straightened, so maybe keratin treatment or some sort of straightening treatment would work.

Does it look the way you want it when you leave the salon? Maybe you could learn to do the same blow dry if so. Imagine you're good at hair as you cut it yourself though

KatPurrson · 05/04/2024 10:35

I’ve had good results with a shampoo/conditioner/leave1in conditioner containing hyaluronic acid. It’s Urtekram Nordic Berries.

@EveryKneeShallBow interested to know how you use the hyaluronic acid overnight.

Shurundi · 05/04/2024 10:45

I've got wavy hair, not coloured and no matter what products I use it still looks a bit frizzy. If I'm going out I use a heated brush, that's the only thing that smooths it into waves.

15% off your first order and there is an offer if you buy a shampoo and conditioner together.

I don't think the cut of your hair is flattering and only adds to it looking dishevelled. I would think about seeing a different hair dresser and get a more groomed look.

Invest in a decent hairbrush as a cheap one can damage your hair.

EmmaEmerald · 05/04/2024 16:00

You can get Percy & Reed via QVC and they'll refund if it doesn't suit you.

I like that brand but too pricey to have all the time.

Dry hair oil helps me.

Geneticsbunny · 06/04/2024 09:39

My hair is similar to yours. I wash and condition as normal and then once I am out of the shower I run my fingers through my hair with a little bit of conditioner, sort it out so the parting is right and just leave it to dry naturally. I end up with neat looking waves rather than frizz. If it frizzes between washes I just dampen it down, add a little bit more conditioner and let it dry naturally again.

CreateYourOwnUsername · 06/04/2024 10:02

@Geneticsbunny I'm going to try that! That's a lot less faffy than CGM / WGM

Geneticsbunny · 06/04/2024 17:53

Thanks. It is what my hairdresser showed me

lotsofpeoplenametheirswords · 06/04/2024 18:42

I'd invest in some Philip Kingsley Extreme Elastisizer and also the bond repair and alternate them twice a week. I think it's the best you can get for hair treatment. I leave both on overnight one on a Sunday and one on a Wednesday and get some good shampoo/conditioner. I really like L'Oréal Professional pro-longer.

ClaudiaWinklepanda · 06/04/2024 18:48

I really like your hair, OP, I like the thickness and the naturalness of the layers/waves.

Nannydoodles · 06/04/2024 18:53

I have a Brazilian treatment done every 3/4 months at the hairdressers and whilst it is expensive, to me it’s worth every penny. It stays smooth, sleek and dries quicker too.
The only downside is that you need to avoid chlorine, salt water and any shampoo/ conditioners with sulphates in or the treatment is stripped out. If I’m going on holiday I just time it to have it done when I get home again.

hidinginthegarden · 06/04/2024 20:49

I have a keratin treatment at the hairdresser and it has made the world of difference to my frizzy hair -which was way more frizzy than yours. There's no need for specific shampoo or conditioner after and it lasts about 6 months for me and I don't need to use straighteners or anything. It's honestly changed my life and I really recommend it.
Mine is a version of keratin that doesn't need special shampoos. I tried a different version first and it wasn't so effective but this is the best thing.

desperatedaysareover · 06/04/2024 20:59

Mine is like that, I’m a fozzball on top and much sleeker on the bottom layer. I’d give Elasticiser a go, my hair sucks up moisture like a sponge. I sleep with it in and I do look a lot better when I do it regularly.

If you can be arsed with wrapping your hair at night I find the Wander-flower heatless curler set pretty good at giving my rather broken waves some structure. Stops it going mad frizzy overnight as well.

Shoes232 · 06/04/2024 21:09

loreal molecular is a 3 step process, it’s amazing It’s totally changed my dry hair

Abracadabra1 · 06/04/2024 21:13

Curly girl and products are for very curly not wavy hair. Anything with oils, shea etc will make your hair lank. Charlotte rich wavy hair method on facebook is for wavy hair. If you follow it it really works. Frizz can be too much moisture. Lighter products are best.

FleaDog · 06/04/2024 21:22

What about a leave in hair serum gloss? I use an old VO5 one, just 2 or 3 drops smoothed on my hair whichever days I want to use it.... i think loreal has one on offer in boots about £8
