50 ways to leave your long standing hairdresser.

I love my hairdresser. I've been going for 19yrs. Dealt with several bouts of pregnancy hair, post pregnancy hair and onto pre-menapausal hair etc... also have a medical condition that impacts condition of my hair/scalp.

But for the last 18months have not been so happy with my hair. The last 3 times it's been the colour- too one colour and too dark - I look washed out in my face. I have mentioned it but nothing changed.

I don't have easy hair and sometimes the cut is great and sometimes it's not and a struggle to make look decent.

I have said its not been great, what can we do about the style, colour on at least 6 visits. She's sympathetic and lovely but this cycle continues.

A friend suggested it's because they don't do much continual training and stick to the same old. Friend said my hair doesnt live up to its potential!

I have booked in for a consultancy at another hairdresser.

I feel like a traitor. I also know this other salon is going to be more costly.... but good hair will make it worth it won't it??

im never happy with my hair anymore, but it’s not my hairdresser, she does everything I want. It’s more my aging face and hair I haven’t come to terms with. Still trying to find something I like.

thatsnotmynamethstsnotmyname · 05/04/2024 23:09

I was with one a few years. Left because I found a closer and cheaper one. She was good but rude so I left. Tried a few then after a five year break ended up back with original hairdresser.

nothingsforgotten · 06/04/2024 00:28

Just don't go back. I've lost count of how many hairdressers I've been to over the years. You are a customer, you don't need to explain anything, just move on.

DBD1975 · 06/04/2024 01:12

Seriously I found breaking up with my hairdresser of many years nearly as stressful as my divorce! 🤣

Catza · 06/04/2024 07:51

I'm really surprised to hear that so many of you carry guilt over trying a new hairdresser. You are not married to them, you know? I am also surprised by the hairdresser above suggesting you phone in with the white lie. Completely unnecessary and what a cheek to be putting your clients in this position. I worked as a manager in hair salons for a decade and I can honestly say, no hairdresser is going think that deeply about you leaving. They have a full book of clients to get through in a shift. The only time they may think about the fact that they haven't seen you for a while is it they happen to see you passing by. They are not going to interrogate you about it, no need to duck if you see them in a supermarket.

I’m in a similar quandary. I’ve recently just coloured it myself but haven’t quite yet cheated although I haven’t been since before Xmas as a result. How weird we are as it’s a business relationship

Baba197 · 06/04/2024 14:22

Had similar situation, I lied and said a friends daughter was training up and needed people to practice on so was doing my hair for free, it meant I had a get out if new hairdresser was a disaster as I could go back to her again and claim I was never letting another trainer near my hair again 😂😂

Mallani · 06/04/2024 14:38

I've just done the same - mine chose to go mobile so I left as I can't stand the idea of having to wash out dye over the bath etc. Just need to find a good replacement but it's fun trying out different salons.

StillSmallVoice · 06/04/2024 15:16

I'm a bit the same. But she knows where I live....

Mrsjayy · 06/04/2024 17:39

I'd hate to have my hair done at home seems such a faff.

I'd hate to have my hair done at home seems such a faff.

Mine comes on a Monday evening usually - I arrange it via text. She cuts my hair and both my adult sons' hair - all done in just over an hour. She cuts our hair in the dining area where the floor is tiled and it takes 5 minutes to sweep up at the end. I am very low maintenance now that I've given up colouring my old hair, so it's just three cuts - but she does do other stuff too, colouring and perms etc.

Wtfmmsnet · 06/04/2024 19:13

I’ve never understood people’s loyalty to hairdressers / barbers. You require a service and are paying for it. It’s no one’s business who you pay to provide that service. Your hairdresser is providing a service and if it’s not meeting your requirements then there’s plenty of other providers out there for you to use. Nothing to feel bad about here and really no need to communicate this to them unless you want to.

NoThanksymm · 09/04/2024 16:32

Yeah. Sounds like your current one is running on automatic.

but it’s soooo hard to find a good hairdresser. I’ve had two in my life. One I could never find again, and the other I still see.

anyway good luck. I wouldn’t worry about it if you’ve bring it up multiple times and she hasn’t changed. New ones are nice, you can be VERY VERY specific and they appreciate it and listen. Whereas with one you see often they’ know what you like.

QueenofTheBorg · 09/04/2024 16:35

I left my hairdresser of 10+ years and didn't feel at all bad. And neither did I explain, although he should have guessed that it might have been because he waited until I had dye on my hair and my head back in a sink before he admitted that his boiler had broken the previous day and my hair would be washed with cold water. I left and never went back.

VenetiaHallisWellPosh · 09/04/2024 16:44

There are so many hair salons where I am, that I'm a flighty piece 😳. I've gone from place to place. The turnover of good stylists is also high here, so you might get one or two excellent sessions then they bugger off to a better job 😂.

Peaceloveandhappiness · 09/04/2024 16:46

Been there a few times, I had a family member who became a hairdresser and I used that as an excuse to change hairdresser. Just told them family member needed us to give them the practice. Worked a treat, family member actually lived too far away to go to them for a haircut but have used this excuse a couple of times.

TunaCrunchy · 09/04/2024 16:47

I ditched mine and then went back about 8 years later, it was fine.
Don’t overthink it.

Tontostitis · 25/06/2024 16:32

Just wondering how you are getting on. I've tried to persuade my longstanding lovely hairdresser to change my colour and she's really reticent. My hair looks lovely after every appointment but I'm getting too old for it to be so dark and I'd like a plan to grow the grey out maybe. I really don't want to leave her as it's almost like therapy after so long together 😪

Nudgethatjudge · 25/06/2024 17:04

Hello!

Well , had 2 appointments (not inc. Consultancy appt.) And back next week.

It was very interesting what she had to say about my hair especially regarding the condition.

Sadly all that dying knackered my hair. So not had any hair dye on it. Some lovely grey showing but tbh I don't care because my hair looks healthier and feels in better condition.

Had some hair detox and treatments. My hair is thicker, fuller, bouncy. Natural wave is returning in full force. The tiny thin hairs on forehead line are actually becoming proper hairs.

I feel my hair is a little short (to what I am used to) but not going to fret about it until more new hair is there and the crap over dyed stuff gone. Then will look at less damaging colour options

Not heard from old hairdresser. I miss her chats but I'm.also pissed off my hair ended up so damaged - its noticeably different condition as several people have commented. I was blaming it 100% on menopause.

Tontostitis · 25/06/2024 19:31

Interesting, I'm about 8 weeks into no dye and it's very difficult the softer colour suits me but it's a bit frizzy I shall ask about some deep treatments thanks for updating

PeachPairPlum · 25/06/2024 19:48

I flit around also.

I've had hairdressers that I've liked in the past , but they move on - sell up or change jobs or just quit. They don't owe us great loyalty and we as customers don't owe them anything in return.

Peaceloveandhappiness · 25/06/2024 20:25

Had this a few times, not being happy with regular hairdresser. I use the excuse that family member training to be a hairdresser and would like to do my hair as practice. It is almost true anyway but works great.

Mxflamingnoravera · 25/06/2024 21:04

My hairdresser has been cutting mine since I was 22. I'm 62 now and he is 67. He's the only one who can deal with my fine hair. We've tried to part, he became a tennis coach in Italy and I has to find an alternative but one day I walked to the salon where I'd been getting ok cuts from a younger male hairdresser, I glanced over and there was G. We weee reunited, he's been at 5 salons over the years, we joke that we've been together than either of our marriages.

That said, he would say go where you need to go. Your stylist will get over it.
