Japan August Capsule ideas?

rainrainSummerornot · 03/04/2024 20:06

First time posting on this section, but would love ideas - I am looking for good ideas for capsule packing for a two week trip to Japan in August.

I have never been & know it will be mega hot outside & aircon on trains & hotels. But it was the only time I could go.

We are travelling every couple of days & travelling by train. Staying at a mix of western & traditional hotels & really don't want to take lots of clothes.

I love brands like hush & Olive clothing but open minded to more ideas.

Thank you

I’d take lots of cotton or linen mix trousers with shirts so you can mix and match.

Last year in August in Japan the average temperature was 42° (daytime and 30° overnight) with 100% humidity. You will need lightweight, airy clothing made of natural fibres.... Don't try and do too much!

I did three weeks in Japan in August with a cabin-bag sized wheeled suitcase a few years ago.

I took seven days' worth of outfits: one top and set of underwear per day, some trousers I could get away with wearing for two days. All natural fibres, lightweight and loose, as it is very sweaty in August, and I made sure that I booked accommodation with laundry facilities at least once every five or six days.

One pair of sandals and one pair of lightweight trainers. One large, light scarf to use as a wrap in places with excessive air-conditioning. Minimal toiletries, as everywhere provides shampoo and body wash, and it is easy to buy mini-sizes of things you need at Muji or convenience stores. I did end up buying a rain cape while I was there, as I was hiring bikes to get around during the tail end of a typhoon.

Thank you & @exexpat super helpful to know you did it at a similar time with small luggage.

Any brand suggestions for linen/light fabric trousers?

When I went in June a few years ago I wore mostly light T-shirts and knee length skirts/cropped trousers that I could mix and match. I had a long sleeved top to add if/when it got cooler in the evenings.

If your hotels are traditional you will need to remove your shoes on entering as you cannot wear outdoor footwear on mats - so you may want to consider ease of removal. With some we were asked to remove at reception, others we could wear to the door of our room.

I have a pair of these, which are very airy and comfortable: https://uk.muji.eu/products/womens-linen-wide-leg-trousers-18985

Uniqlo also has quite a lot of linen/linen-blend stuff at the moment, and M&S has something similar: https://www.marksandspencer.com/linen-rich-wide-leg-cropped-trousers/p/clp60650301?color=BLACK#intid=pid_pg1pip48g4r1c1

August in Japan is really hot and humid! Loose cotton clothing is definitely the way to go. I'd also pack a large brimmed hat and pick up a uv umbrella when you're there. Most of the Japanese hotels will have a laundry room with washers and dryers so you don't have to pack too much clothes. If you're missing anything they have uniqlos everywhere.

A couple of silk tops in white or very dark colours - hides the sweat!

If you are anywhere near an area with an Indian/Pakistani-heritage population, go to a market. The lightweight, loose cotton trousers they sell (similar to the bottom half of a salwar kameez but without the top tunic) are absolutely perfect for travel in hot countries.

You will resent every gram of weight in your suitcase, as you lug it in the heat. I would only take 3-4 tops, plus some soap leaves, and just hand-wash things. Takes 5 minutes.

I always take a sun umbrella with me in Asia during summer and a mini hand-held fan recharged with USB.

I also wear Issey Miyake Pleats Please, but it's expensive. It never creases and is perfect for travel. You might get a bargain on EBay.

Thank you everyone super helpful.

Love finding out new brands so thanks for Pleats Please & the air Uniqlo.

Brolly is a must, have booked via inside Japan so travel is organised with bag forwarding & trains etc.

Looking forward to planning out the outfits.

I know I need pretty socks to slip on & sandals etc
