Dyeing own roots v hairdresser

Every 6 weeks I get my brown roots done at the hairdressers and it costs a fortune. I think I've been stupid as it's not even a special colour - it's a '6' with no variation. (Learnt over the years!).

Rather than pay the hairdresser each time I thought that at least every other time, if not more, I should do them myself. Does anyone else do this and is it quite easy? What brand do you recommend etc? Is a standard colour chart flat 6 just a 6 on the box?

I do my own roots in between hair dresser appointments so I can leave a bigger gap. My hairdresser uses permanent dye for my roots but I use semipermanent. I just mix up a little so a box lasts about 6 applications. It does help keep the cost down.

I do my roots all of the time. I asked for the colour code and bought the nice and easy root touch kit in that shade.
I started at the beginning of the first lockdown and can’t tell the difference.

I do mine. I buy Majirel and developer from the beauty supplies shop and apply it myself. 6 on its own can be a bit flat. I mix 6 with 5.12.
Maybe get a friend to help you with the back until you're more confident.
You can buy a mixing bowl and brush for a few quid.
Can you ask your hairdresser what strength developer they use on you?

Oh that's a good point I have no idea. I'll have to ask!

I mix it up. I go to the hairdressers every 12 weeks’ish & s junior does my roots (about £20 more than diy) before I get it cut. DIY roots in between at 5/6 weeks using an esalon kit.

I do my own, I use Lloreal. My hairdresser tells me, I do it well, she also advises me if I’ve used the wrong colour, so I know the next time, as I do tend to change colours. I still have it cut every 6/7 weeks, so I don’t feel guilty about taking work or money away, I just don’t want to be sat in hairdressers for hours.
