Do you normally have to have a patch test for hi lights?

I've just booked in with a new salon for foil hi lights. They asked me to do a patch test 48 hours before appointment which is booked for Wednesday. But I completely forgot it was closed today 🤦 so haven't been able to get the patch test done. I've never had to do one for hi lights before and I always thought it was 24 hours for patch tests.

It depends on the salon in my experience….the one I’m at now I had to have a patch test of 72 hours….previous ones no patch test ( only for full colour )

Yes, you need to do one 48 hours in advance. I'd call them first thing tomorrow as they'll probably require you to move the appointment.

It's normal and they're generally pretty strict about it.

I've only even had one if having a tint never foils.

I've never once been asked to do a patch test in over 20 years, various salons and hairdressers, eyebrow tinting, hair tinting and foils , not once!

For me the risk of reaction and chemical burns means I would be wary of any place not asking for a patch test, that includes any eyebrow or lash tinting either. Google allergic reaction to hair dye and ask would I want to look like this for however short a time.

I would ring them first thing. Their insurance might dictate the 48 hours bit to cover them in case anything happens.

Didn't you have to book in the patch test?
When did they say to come in for it?

I feel like all hairdressers say this to cover themselves/insurance purposes. But not many are bothered to actually do it.
Could they have been one of those types of hairdressers?

Totallybannanas · 01/04/2024 23:15

I've always been told by other hairdressers only patch test needed for a tint/colour. I have always had a patch test for brows or a hair colour. I was meant to just nip in over the weekend but they closed early Saturday and obviously not open today 🫤

That's very poor practice.

The colourist who did my hair for over 15 years had to do a new patch test on me when she joined a new salon.
