Style rules eg white trousers

So I’m following a French stylist who’s actually quite good.

She does have a few style rules re classic clothes and one of these is white trousers. No way I’d ever wear these for various reasons.

My main point though, would you follow style rules?

Nobody makes me follow rules.

Not sure about her credentials regarding ‘style’ but she’s standing in front of an IKEA kallax ‘diy’ unit that all 10yr olds have in their bedroom.
Maybe take her advice with a pinch of salt!

I can't wear colours I don't like - green, brown, purple.

There was s fad at work of people going to this woman who would "Do your colours for you" - Colour Me Beautiful or something such.
Even if I'd been told I should wear those colours because I was a spring or autumn tupe, I couldn't. I actually bought some items to force myself to be more adventurous but hated how I looked and binned them 😁

I agree. If I like a colour it's "my colour". If I don't, it isn't.

Some of her ideas actually aren't that bad. She is funny. What I do like about her is she suggests things to try. She's French obvs so some of their style rules are different to ours. Having holidayed (parents have a house there) in SW France, I can contest that not all French people are stylish, at all.

When she posted about wearing heels with trouser suits my plantar fasciitis prone feet screamed in pain!

I dont mean hilarious in a bad way, I think she's brililant, I wish I had discovered this years ago. I have shared the link on another thread where a poster is asking to look more foxy.

I had discovered, way way way too late in life some of the things she is saying. I discovered them simply by accident, wearing more fitted clothing, ones that give you a waist rather than try to disguise your size, tucking things in instead of leaving it loose. I wish I had been doing this instead of going the way of the frump. Still, its not too late as she says.

I think she's brilliant.

HolidayAtNight · 01/04/2024 13:49

I dress smartly but don't like the classic look/classic pieces. I guess I follow a set of internal "rules" I've devised for myself over many years of being obsessed with clothes and trying a wide variety of looks! Although I would wear M. Marceau's top upthread so am probably not best placed to comment...

jay55 · 01/04/2024 14:47

I'm a dirt magnet, I would never wear white trousers.

I'd like a set of rules to follow sometimes just to take the effort out.

Biscoffisthebest · 01/04/2024 15:04

I love Marianne! I have been following her for years, she’s funny. She did a video once on why French women don’t get fat (‘no snacking’) so now my Dds & I have coined this phrase, said in a bad French accent, whenever we are tempted to eat more than necessary.
I think her style rules are a little old fashioned (she hates leggings and athletic wear for example) but I like the way she is quite positive and funny as well as very forthright. But yes, none of it is ground breaking but it may give some ideas on how to smarten up a bit if you’re quite a ‘classic’ dresser anyway.

DuchessNope · 01/04/2024 15:51

Nearly half of French adults are overweight so the no snacking thing does not seem to be working for them. Like the UK obesity going up is tracking smoking going down they’re just a bit behind us on both.

Lifeetc · 01/04/2024 16:44

Red knickers under white trousers are meant to be less visible than white knickers under white trousers, not sure if that's style rule or not

soupfiend · 01/04/2024 16:49

I would have thought flesh coloured would be better than red

I made the mistake of wearing white trousers while riding my bike and the seat made sort of skid marks on the outside of my trousers as I was sliding on and off the seat.

Unfortunate.

Lifeetc · 01/04/2024 16:51

@soupfiend
Yeah I'm not sure why tbh but it's meant to be true!

CreateYourOwnUsername · 01/04/2024 17:02

I don't like the woman in the youtube video's style at all, so wouldn't be taking her advice! I used to live in Paris (ages and ages ago) and don't think all French women are A) thin or B) stylish. It's a lot like any other city tbh - a bit of a mix

GettingStuffed · 01/04/2024 19:46

Surely white trousers are impractical. Unless you only go out in the dry, don't sit down or eat or drink anything you'll be filthy in no time.

EllaPaella · 01/04/2024 20:12

Not impractical at all for a grown adult who manages to eat and drink without spilling/wiping food down themselves and can check a chair isn't covered in crap before sitting down.

Yes see my bike seat incident!

Also I remember now going to someones house and we were having dinner but it was on the sofa and I was offered a tray and thinking that would be safer and cleaner, I took that, but then afterwards realised that the tray must have been dirty underneath and left red/tomato/paprika type stains on them!! I was furious.

mintbiscuit · 01/04/2024 20:37

I love a pair of white trousers! Only off white though. White white looks too harsh.

I used to love Lydia Tomlinson for getting inspiration. Although adapted a wee bit for my age (40s) as I’m not the young beautiful svelte thing she is. Classic looking on a budget!

VenusClapTrap · 01/04/2024 21:16

This women dresses like my Dutch MIL. White trousers, Breton top and blazer has been her standard look for years. She’s nearly 80. She’s smart and looks nice, but I wouldn’t call her stylish.

I love florals though so what do I know.

BronzeAge · 01/04/2024 12:39

Honestly, from the first ten seconds of that video, I wouldn’t be taking style tips from someone whose signature look appears to channel Marcel Marceau.

Ha ha, I thought exactly the same

StarlightLady · 02/04/2024 04:15

I probably sub consciously follow some so called style rules, l suspect many of us do, but to what degree varies.

I’m not a great trouser/jeans wearer, l’m a “rare breed” 😀, l love my dresses, but l do own several pairs of white trousers and are worn mainly on summer evenings.

White is easier to look after, no delicate washes required, hot washes mean they are no more difficult to look after than something black or navy.

I am UK born but used to live in France, I’ve seen various comments from so called French Stylists that do not reflect the woman on the street. Just one example, l read something the other day saying that hardly any French women wear multiple earrings. A wander round the streets of Paris or Marseilles reveals a different story.

I do wear white trousers, nothing expensive as they need replacing every year.
White wide leg linens (Next are this years choice) £22
White XL magic trousers, the bigger size so they're looser and more like a smart jogger £25
White straight leg jeans, usually M & S Lily sized up, but I've just ordered the Hannah's from New Look, £29.99, not arrived yet.

dudsville · 02/04/2024 09:13

I just watched that video. Personally I don't find her unique, creative or inspiring, and I don't think she succeeds in her quest to be young, which is an odd one anyway. I think she comes across as safe and within her age group, which are fine things. She reminds me of my grandmother who used to talk about "the old lady" next door.... who was younger than my grandmother. Having rules, especially "don't look old", as a primary goal for dressing can send a person down an anxious path. Starting instead with notions of what inspires, what feels good, what do I enjoy, etc., makes the process fun.

Rina66 · 04/04/2024 16:50

The New Look Hannah jeans arrived, I love the style but they're not white, they're cream. Luckily I ordered the blue denim too and they are really lovely on and great for £29.99, fit is true to size too.
