What's your grey hair care routine?

How do you grey haired ladies keep your hair looking soft and shiny without yellowing? I've been grey a while and my hair is much coarser than it was and is becoming discoloured due to heat damage.

Blue or purple shampoo weekly, and very limited use of hairdryer/straighteners. If I'm not swimming, I only wash my hair every 5 days or so. If I do swim, I use protective conditioner, but it's in much better condition when I don't swim. You could try toner, too.

I use the Kerastase Blonde Absolu range, only wash once a week, air dry and keep it long and in a protective ‘up’ hairstyle. When I take it down its in beautiful condition and I never get split ends. I get a trim once a year or so.

Purple shampoo occasionally, but I have very short hair so it doesn't have time to get yellow

I agree purple shampoo to make your grey hair more vibrant.

Leave to dry but use a hairdryer when it's still got a bit of moisture in it. I use a heat spray on the ends.

I found purple shampoo really drying and it didn't do anything for the yellow tinge. I use John Frieda's Frizz Ease range. Shampoo twice, condition for at least 3 minutes, wrap in a towel for about 20 minutes then add leave in conditioner. Leave to dry naturally. It will look shit at this point. Then damp hair once dry with a heat protective spray and use straighteners. I only need to do this once a week. Weekly heat from one source rather than blow drying then straightening is much gentler and my hair isn't yellow at all. Just making sure your hair is as conditioned as much as possible is key.

My hairdresser told me to wear a swimming cap whilst swimming, but the secret is to wet your hair with normal water first before putting it on, so that the chlorinated water doesn't permeate it.

DelphiniumBlue · 31/03/2024 10:15

Yes , I,ve heard about the swimming cap and normal water, and I do that, but my hair is still affected, and noticeably dryer and yellower when I swim! Purple shampoo is also quite harsh, so using that too often means a constant battle between colour and texture!

That's interesting about swimming, I've just started to go.
I occasionally use puple shampoo or hairmask but my hair sucks the colour up so its only when I want to have lilac streaks.
Also only use blue or white shampoo or it takes the colour of the shampoo.
My hair is very greasy,at the scalp, now I'm not bleaching the living daylights out of it, I don't wash it as much but use dry shampoo a lot.
My hair is very soft but I would still use conditioner or a hair mask on the ends.
I use a cool hairdryer setting but have never used any other heat on it as I'm terrified I'll burn it yellow.
