Plain everyday cardigans.

WorkingFromHomeShite · 30/03/2024 09:38

In a variety of colours but plain. Like the equivalent of a comfy pair of jeans, a cardigan you can wear with anything purely as a warm item, not ‘pretty’ or ‘fashionable’.

Preferably under £20.

Or, any specific shops to keep an eye out for cardigans later in the year?

H&M used to do a rack of 100% cotton cardigans in a range of colours.

Darklane · 30/03/2024 15:53

If you have an M&S outlet store within reach, usually on the outlet villages, they sell them cheaply. I got three for £8 each at the Gretna outlet.

piefacedClique · 30/03/2024 15:59

I’ve had great ones from Tu and M&S recently. I hate showing my arms at work and theirs are perfect: wash really well and lovely colours. I think the tu one was £14

Just had a look and Marks and Spencers have a good selection of cardigans under £20

came here to say this, m and s is a good place to start.

serin · 30/03/2024 16:04

Primark cotton cardis in menswear. £12. I have khaki, black and navy. Wear them at work and last ages.

TitaniasAss · 30/03/2024 16:18

Honestly this place is ridiculous sometimes. No one can post anything without the most ridiculous passive aggressive remarks and one upmanship from some posters.

OP, as others have said, M & S would be a good shout. Hope you find what you're looking for.

This might be the snobbiest snarkiest reply I've seen on here...

Totally!

CinnamonJellyBeans · 30/03/2024 16:39

Primark knitwear is good value and washes well. There's not a great deal in stock right now, so you may have to wait until Autumn.

ButtonHouse · 30/03/2024 17:17

I think TU stuff is usually pretty decent quality and not too pricey.

I like m and s stuff too.

I once managed to get a 100% wool Hobbs cardigan from a charity shop for £10, perfect condition. So I now always have a rummage around the knitwear sections of charity shops. But I'm quite wary about buying second hand knitwear online because I've wasted too much money on items which were really worn looking when they arrived.

Hope you find what you need, I love a cardy!

My gosh.. why are some people so snobby and pedantic.( OP didn't mention pure cashmere or wool)
I love a good Cardigan/ shrug.. long and short.
I buy at..
Tu.
Bon mache.
Asda.
Roman.
Simplybe
Ambrose Wilson.

I buy ALL my clothes from tose places (Temu, too). Some of us haven't got lots of money

Deathraystare · 30/03/2024 17:38

@WorkingFromHomeShite
You are very brave asking here! There is for some reason not a lot of love for the things. Mumsnetters clutch at their pearls when you mention them!!!

SurpriseSparDay · 30/03/2024 10:09

Where are you buying brand new not pre-owned woollen cardigans from, for less than £20, @ButtonHouse?

I’m assuming the OP meant wool as she specified wanting something warm? Might be possible to get a cotton cardigan for that price.

But obviously she’ll get far better quality for her money if she buys pre-owned.

Yes that's what I meant lovely quality when buying second hand

TesticularHeft · 30/03/2024 20:12

Tesco have some plain ones at the minute and 25% off with a Clubcard. I can't say how much they are and I only saw black and cream but they looked really soft.

tobee · 30/03/2024 20:48

I've found Amazon useful for this.

Jumbojem · 30/03/2024 21:00

Uniqlo for sure, merino or lambs wool. They will be more like £30 but wash well and don't bobble, are lightweight but warm.
That said one of my fave throw on while at home cardis is a cheap non wool one from Asda. It's bobbled horribly so not worn out of the house now sadly.

PorpoiseWithPurpose · 30/03/2024 21:48

Jump on vinted. You can get some great bargains on there.

JustbemoreMargo · 30/03/2024 22:28

I recommend eBay and Vinted. I buy most of my cardigans and jumpers there these days. Plenty of lovely barely worn (or new with tags!) wool and cashmere. Occasionally have had a bad experience (poor quality, not as described), but still much more affordable than paying full price for new. Happy shopping!

pizzaHeart · 30/03/2024 22:37

I’ve got myself light grey cardigan with wool from Primark for £8. It’s warm and looks nice.

Copperoliverbear · 30/03/2024 22:45

H & M

WhereAreWeNow · 30/03/2024 23:07

Uniqlo and Woolovers

WhereAreWeNow · 30/03/2024 23:09

Sorry, just realised you want something under £20. Uniqlo have regular sale items. I've got nice cardis for about £15 in their sake. Woolovers is less likely for under £20 so ignore that suggestion.

Salacia · 31/03/2024 10:04

All my cardigans are Vinted now! Brand new M&S cashmere for a tenner etc. Only problem is obvious you have to be patient, spend a lot of time searching etc. Plus you can’t return if it doesn’t fit/suit you. Also need to make sure you check seller reviews but touch wood I’ve had no issues so far!

My tip is to find a style that works for you in a shop then see if you can get it in different colours second hand once you’ve seen how well it wears/how much use you actually get out of it (for example, I like the Hobbs Carrie bolero to go over summer dresses, if I look on Vinted now there are 8 different colour options in my size starting from about 8 quid). I’ve just ordered a Hope and Ivy cardigan for 18 pounds (I have the other colourway which I found in a charity shop last year for 7…).

If you’d rather new then I’d have a look at M&S as other posters have recommended. I’ve had one of their 20 quid cardigans for ages now and it’s still going! It’s not the warmest in terms of it wouldn’t do by itself for a cold day but it’s absolutely fine as an extra layer/is all you need on a warm day.

WorkingFromHomeShite · 31/03/2024 21:37

Thank you for all these recommendations!
