Have inherited a vintage fur coat. The makers do not exist anymore. Can anyone identify this fur? TIA

My mum had a similar coat that was coney fur, it’s difficult to tell from photos though.

Redshoeblueshoe · 29/03/2024 23:32

My mum had one, looks more like the picture on the right. I believe it was mink.

tiberseptim · 30/03/2024 00:01

Looks more like sable than mink to me.

justasking111 · 30/03/2024 00:18

Musquash

caringcarer · 30/03/2024 00:29

Looks like mink to me.

GrumpyPanda · 30/03/2024 00:32

Is it relatively stiff? Could be nutria.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 30/03/2024 00:33

The fur looks quite long. I was wondering if it could be beaver.

pizzaHeart · 30/03/2024 00:38

if it’s soft and rather short fur - it’s mink, otherwise I agree with @GrumpyPanda that it looks like nutria.

KeeeeeepDancing · 30/03/2024 05:47

Definitely not mink
What do the labels say on them?

CurlsnSunshinetime4tea · 30/03/2024 06:13

Possibly Muskrat or Beaver.
If you lift the lining the size and sewing pattern of the pelts might give you more clues.

Linearforeignbody · 30/03/2024 06:53

My Nan had one which was coney. She said it was the cheap version of mink.
Just realised that coney is actually rabbit!

borntobequiet · 30/03/2024 08:00

It looks very like my mother’s 1950s musquash fur coat.

Illegally18 · 10/04/2024 21:50

Thank you ladies for your replies- but I'm still no closer to knowing what it is since your opinions have been varied. Now, could someone recommend a good honest furrier in London? TIA

HashBrownandBeans · 10/04/2024 21:55

I would say that it is beaver.

KeeeeeepDancing · 10/04/2024 22:40

There used to be a furrier in Southend. They might still be there.

RosesAndHellebores · 10/04/2024 22:43

I'd say beaver. Not mink or coney.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 10/04/2024 22:48

Musquash ( a rodent as mink is) . Virtually everyone in my family had one in the 1940’s & ‘50’s. They were generally lighter in colour, but could be dyed to resemble any of the pricier furs.

I hope you are going to wear it, there is nothing as warm as proper fur.
