Le Chameau wellies, should they be like this?

I have been gifted a pair of these as I would never afford them myself normally.

On opening them it seems that there is a kind of sticky layer and some pale white marks on them that look like scuffs but sort of come off if you rub them a little, just like when you rub your finger on a rubber eraser (or did when you were at primary school).

My question is: if you've had this brand before is this normal or should I return them? Retuning will be a bit awkward as they were a present but is allowed. Or maybe this is how they are and I should just rub off those marks with my fingers? I was expecting more for something that cost about 150 (I don't know exactly), though.

Thanks for any information.

No thats completely normal, mine were the same ( not now as covered in mud). I belive it’s because they are high quality ‘proper’ rubber. I read something about it , but cant’t remember where. I got the black rubber ones from Brand Alley for £55 quid, wouldn’t have paid full price though!

It's called blooming. Its natural with natural rubber

Thanks for letting me know, that's a relief not to have to go through a returns process. Do I just leave those white marks on there or try and rub them off?

They'll soon wear off, mine are now covered in a layer of mud! I wouldn't remove it.

You can buy special rubber restorer which really mates wellies look new again after you've worn them alit but also removes this blooming and makes the colour shine

Should I really need to buy an extra product for a £150 wellington boot that's brand new, though?

They’re wellies, just hose the mud off when you’re finished outside.

madeinmanc · 29/03/2024 13:56

They're not for wearing in mud, particularly, more for walking in the rain.

And actually why should I cover up what £150 wellies look like? 🙄

https://www.lechameau.com/boot-care-guide

It tells you here how to care for them. The polish helps keep the rubber pliable, and I use at the beginning and end of winter. But if you're only walking in rain, you probs won't need to do much. Just buff the rubber clean with a soft microfibre cloth.
