Dry eyes in peri

Has anyone else experienced this? I am 43 and just started a trial of HRT that has successfully tackled all other symptoms (thank fuck). But the dry eyes haven’t improved. My eyes themselves are dry but I can cope with that. However the skin around them has been sore and irritated for months and nothing topical sorts it. I now have lines all around my eyes and makeup really drags and sits in them. I look like I’ve aged about ten years overnight. Has anyone experienced this and found anything that helps??

I also have dry eyes, didn't realise it was so affected by age

I have now tried the Omega 7 oil and it is helping already. Very grateful for the advice into this thread, I have been dealing with this for months to no avail. Fingers crossed they may return fully to normal.

@learieonthewildmoor does that contain omega 7?

Droolylabradors · 01/04/2024 14:03

@BedRot I'm on day 3, how long did it take for you to notice a difference?

learieonthewildmoor · 01/04/2024 14:10

Yes: it’s fish oil, borage oil and flax seed. I didn’t need to use drops after taking them for a while.

Droolylabradors · 01/04/2024 15:56

Thanks @learieonthewildmoor i eat tons of flaxseed in my diet, I mix it with porridge. Obviously not enough!

BedRot · 01/04/2024 19:23

@Droolylabradors I think it took about 5 days, so hopefully you will experience the benefits soon. I have started on the maximum dose of 4 per day of the Pharma Nord.

Flaxseed was recommended by my optician and has definitely helped

Droolylabradors · 01/04/2024 20:28

@BedRot thank you. Not sure I can do the full 4 capsules but will persist with 2. It's worrying me that I eat 2 or 3 tins of oily fish and eat so much Flax, I shouldn't be in this state. I'm hoping it's just lack of hormones.

I went to my GP. I have prescribed drops. You can buy them over the counter too. Job done.

JammyJays · 02/04/2024 16:29

Ps. I assumed I was getting infections and put up with it for several years! All along, it was dry eyes, which is easily sorted by the eyedrops. My GP sent me for some kind of special test to doublecheck that I did have dry eyes. The NHS ophthalmic person told me that I would need to use the drops for the rest of my life. I haven’t had any problems since!

43ontherocksporfavor · 03/04/2024 07:03

Which drops @JammyJays ?

JammyJays · 03/04/2024 11:11

They are the standard lubricating eye drops.
Hypeomellose 0.3% eye drops. I think you can get them easily and cheaply over-the-counter too. I use mine twice a day, and since I began I have not had any problems with my eyes.

However, I think it is best to go to your GP, who will send you for further simple test with a local ophthalmic NHS specialist. This is what happened to me and so I got a proper “diagnosis“. (I also suspect there are different strengths of these eye drops, available, but I am not sure exactly.)

I know this is a relatively old thread but wanted to check in on how everyone got on with the omega supplement as I came across this and am considering trying it.

For the past 18 months my eyes are so dry that I can’t open them when I wake at night- feels like the eyeball is stuck to the eyelid. Could this be hormonal? I’m 47 and started HRT 6 months ago. Eyes haven’t improved though periods fatigue and irritability have improved I think (though sometimes I find it hard to tell).

My eyes don’t seem to bother me in the day it’s really at night they are so dry.

43ontherocksporfavor · 14/12/2024 10:37

Hi. I didn’t take the drops in the end.My eyes just suddenly got better and don’t have a problem now. O do eat fatty fish, salmon, nuts, avocados and seeds every week. Maybe that helped.

The best ones for eye dryness are Sea Buckthorn tablets, Pharma Nord do them but you can also get different brands. They helped a lot but now I use Hypermellose eye drops or heat the eye mask in the microwave and put over eyes.

CheerfulBunny · 14/12/2024 22:35

I have to put drops in through the night, OP. I usually wake a couple of times and keep them on my nightstand. I read that Jenny Éclair, the comedian, does this thing with vaseline and squares of cling film over her eyes at night which is terrifying! I tried some nighttime ointment stuff once and it was horrible. Everything was blurry and it made me panicky. I don't know how she can stand it. Her dry eye is very very bad though.

redannie18 · 14/12/2024 23:10

I had this and it was blepharitis (i’m 44, the optician said it was an age thing).

Warm cloth or wipe with hot water on cotton wool, gently massage under the eyes, and use the viscotears eye gel. I got one of those hot eye pen type massagers which is lovely and helped a lot (use with a little bit of oil so it doesn't drag the skin) not necessary but just felt good and worked well.

Thanks for the replies. Is this pretty common then?
