Summer shoes - assuming we get a summer this year

Every year I buy myself a couple of casual summer dresses and think right that's the basis of my summer wardrobe. I get some flattish sandals to go with them and I'm sorted. Right?

Well no, because the sandals are never comfortable and I can't run around with the children in them, so I end up wearing old shorts all the time, so I can wear trainers or plimsolls with them.

Do the rest of you put up with the discomfort and spend the summer watching your kids rather than joining in with the fun or is there an alternative I'm missing?

I can't stand that thong bit that goes between your toes on a lot of flat sandals and they need to stay on (ie must have at least a strap at the back, no mules) so I can run in them. Any ideas?

As you can probably gather, high fashion is not my priority, but I prefer not to dress like my Gran.

Nice summery colours funky

CountessDracula · 28/03/2008 10:34

this sort of thing fine with casual dresses I find

and birkies

MrsBadger · 28/03/2008 10:34

I have these but in a cream/stone colour - they are not exactly elegant but they are a lot better than trainers, stay on even when running and don't have a toe thong

How about those canvas Converse-meets-ballet pump things thus?

CountessDracula · 28/03/2008 10:35

I have those lo rise converse no laces ones in a stoney greeny colour
they go with loads

perpetualworrier · 28/03/2008 10:38

I know Cod. In my head I'm always going to have some nice dresses and sandals, but then I put the damn things on and I'm so flipping uncomfortable. Last year I had some converse style pumps, made from nubuck leather (which I think were boys shoes actually) which I loved, but they've fallen appart and they don't go with skirts. I suspect your idea of casual and mine may differ a bit

See dizzy I like those, esp the Jones ones, but could I run in them? And they're not going to be as comfy as my old trainers are they?

perpetualworrier I have no idea why you would want to I'm a trainers/ballet pumps/ haviana flip flop myself AND I never run lol

do what they do in NYC, put the dress shoes in the bag and wear the trainers till you get where you're going lol

perpetualworrier · 28/03/2008 10:42

LOL seb - if only, my wellies are probably my favorite shoes, I've certianly had some of my best days out in them!

But dizzy don't you miss joining in their games? Just me?

Countess do you mean these?

I like them a lot, but would they go with a dress/skirt? I also like Mrs Badger's canvas pumps, but I'm not sure about canvas shoes. Don't they rub/make your feet smell?

I'm being difficult aren't I?

not when pregnant with 3rd, dh can do the running this summer

stick one of those smelly feet insoles in them, if they work on dh's work boots they'll work on anything!!!

CountessDracula · 28/03/2008 10:59

yy i linked to those further down!

I wear them without anything
they don't smell

I guess you could wear those silly little cutaway sock things

perpetualworrier · 28/03/2008 11:24

Sorry Countess, I think we must have crossed posts. I do like those a lot, although I'm having trouble finding any colours other than that Navy.

Be kind, I admit I don't know what I'm doing, but does anyone like these or these ?

I guess more will be available nearer to summer

CountessDracula · 28/03/2008 11:26

no sorry
they look very cat woman

snowleopard · 28/03/2008 11:29

I like those pw! - especially the first link. I think funky plimsoll-type shoes can be great with a dress in summer, also with loose wide-leg trousers. Rocket dog is a make that I really like for that sort of thing. And you might also like birkenstocks - some people hate them but I think they're great, and they come in funky patterns etc.

snowleopard · 28/03/2008 11:32

rocket dog

snowleopard · 28/03/2008 11:32

birkenstock

snowleopard · 28/03/2008 11:34

bum, I don't know why that's not working - just search for birkenstock at schuh

MrsBadger · 28/03/2008 11:38

I think the skechers are a bit chunky for wearing with dresses
these are worth a try - if they're anyting lik last year's they are lovely and soft

CountessDracula · 28/03/2008 11:47

am liking these new birkies
