The two major flaws of Vinted

  1. As a buyer you cannot leave feedback if you return something. This means that poor sellers who try and palm off their bobbly, smelly old jumpers on people get away with it. And as a buyer, the feedback you are reading is not the comprehensive picture.
  2. The buyer pays return postage, thus losing out financially even when a seller is dishonest and items are not as described.
After opening yet another bobby, vaguely smelly jumper this morning AIBU to say this is going to stop me from using the app?

I guess it depends on whether you see buyers or sellers as more likely to be chancing it. My personal view is that returns are a major problem in the fashion world in general at the moment (new and resale) and should be discouraged unless absolutely necessary, so I think having that slight barrier of the postage cost as well as the usual hassle is a good thing. I think Vinted works so well because it's a bit like the wild west - you can get a bargain, but you also shoulder a risk. I've never considered returning any of the dud items; they either get relisted if they don't fit, or disposed of if they're not suitable for resale.

It's well known that Vinted's customer service is extremely lacking, so I wouldn't risk selling anything on there if I knew that spurious returns had to be paid for by me. It's only worth selling things at Vinted prices if it's easy and pretty much guaranteed. (It goes without saying that I photograph and describe my items accurately!)

Basically, for me the bottom line is that the advantage the buyer gets out of Vinted is ridiculously low prices, therefore it's only fair that the seller gets an advantage too.

I think this sums it up for me really. I sell a lot on Vinted and I do tend to price things fairly low so that they go quickly.

If I knew that sellers could chance it by claiming there was an issue with an item (even when that is not actually the case) and return it at my expense I’d probably just stop selling on there as it’s not worth the hassle.

I’m not running a business I’m just selling on some clothes I no longer need at a price which is more than fair (IMO).

Also for those commenting on sizing - I would never buy anything without photos of the size labels. I do notice that a lot of sellers make mistakes though, I was looking at a “size 8” Ralph Lauren dress the other day and the seller said in the description “it’s Ralph Lauren so the sizing runs really large and this would probably fit a 10 or a 12”. Clearly the concept of US sizing has completely passed her by.

i love Vinted, you just have to be really careful checking photos and labels and ask for more info. Or resell.

...2 of the reasons I stick to ebay.

As a buyer I take a very "caveat emptor" approach to Vinted, and don't spend too much just in case. I also frequently relist things that don't fit. I don't mind the seller-friendly policies as it makes a nice change; seeing as eBay is now so buyer-friendly as to be seller-unfriendly, I feel it balances out.

Ebay is ridiculous now! Much prefer Vinted

usernotfound0000 · 24/03/2024 17:04

Not had any disasters but like others, £10 is probably my limit for I will spend in case it goes wrong. I always ask to see the label if not pictured, and as a seller I always picture the label just because the sizing options on Vinted doesn't always allow you to list it correctly (especially kids clothes where something is 5-6 for example).

LivingDeadGirlUK · 24/03/2024 17:28

I have listed something as the wrong size and wouldn't have dreamed of making the buyer send it back before refunding :O

WeightoftheWorld · 24/03/2024 17:33

I only buy new with tags and never spend more than £20. Obviously it's never impossible to avoid every attempt at a scan but this way I will never have spent much money if it does go to shit, and it's also much less likely that it is shit if I can see the tags all on in the photos. I've bought less than 10 items ever I think and sold about the same and so far not had any problems thankfully. I've turned royal mail off as a delivery option for my selling too because it's not tracked at all, so I feel that protects me a little as a seller.

This has literally just happened to me and the woman was so rude!

It was a top that used to have in a 14 which was now too tight for me, so I’d been looking for it in a 16. It took a while, but I found it. When I arrived, it was massive and I checked the label which was a 20! When I queried it, she replied saying she’d thought it was wrongly labelled so just labelled it a 16. When I explained the situation she said, ‘well, everybody’s body is different’ and said she wouldn’t be paying return postage!

lindyloo57 · 24/03/2024 19:48

This is why I prefer ebay, as a seller and buyer, yes there are fees but the customer service is great if there's a problem.

lindyloo57 · 24/03/2024 19:52

I brought a dress new with tags, but it had a pluck in the back the seller said she'd missed, so I got a full refund and kept the dress, she didn't want it back, I gave it to charity,

Acqua · 25/03/2024 15:22

It's luck of the draw it seems. Most of the time you get lovely sellers who send what they have described, but Vinted is sadly spoilt by unscrupulous chancers offloading shrunken or mouldy items, encouraged as they know Customer Services don't care even with photo evidence. I do think twice now and analyse the seller's reviews. As a Buyer, I feel safer with Ebay.

NotMeNoNo · 25/03/2024 17:59

I often ask for measurements if it's not clear on size. If the seller CBA well that's that.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 25/03/2024 18:04

I’ve been put off vinted for the reasons you’ve said you plus I find it exhausting searching for clothes.

Candleabra · 25/03/2024 18:06

I like Vinted but I have rules andI accept that I’ll get the odd dodgy item but on the whole most are good.
I don’t pay more than £10 for anything.
I don’t buy from people with no or limited sales history
I don’t buy designer stuff - if it looks too good to be true it probably is
I buy stuff from shops I know the sizing so it’s less of a punt
I always make the seller show me a photo of the label
I always knock a few quid off as a first offer

Ahugga · 25/03/2024 18:17

Had my first ever vinted dail this week. Item arrived damaged, seller didn't respond, neither did Vinted support. Case was closed as everything ok, and doesn't seem to be anything I can do about it! Won't stop using it though, mostly it works out fine!
