Question regarding root touch up

I am starting to go grey. I have very long hair and have some grey strands (increasing) that I want to cover.
Would a root touch up be ok to cover these as it's not just my 'roots'. How would I cover areas where the greys are mixed with natural hair colour?

I doubt it. Unless you can match your own hair colour very precisely to the root touch up, just doing the roots on otherwise un-coloured hair is going to look a bit odd. You’d probably need to colour it all over first in the shade closest to your hair colour or whatever shade you want (use two bottles as your hair is long) then in future you can do a root touch up to match that shade.

I have this exact same dilemma, OP! Long hair and it seems such a shame to ruin the quality of the undyed, untreated hair that is 98% of it for the sake of the (very visible) strands of grey at my forehead 😕

I don't think this is discussed often, maybe because people have already cut their hair short by the time it starts going grey? But that's just a guess. It feels like the assumption is that you will cut it shorter and go for a standard box dye. But it feels like there should be another option.

My suggestion would be to go for a semi permanent rather than permanent as it fades out gradually. Nice & Easy is good and it doesn’t damage the condition like permanent dye. In fact it makes it look really shiny!

When mine started going grey, I got lighter highlights put all over so that the grey bits could be mistaken for blonde bits, then as more grey has come through, those blonder bits have increased and it’s become more of an ombré.

I get mine professionally highlighted every six months or so, but in between I use a box dye. I apply the dye with a dye brush to the roots, wait 15/20 mins, then brush through whatever is on the roots towards the ends (just with normal hairbrush, not trying for full coverage, just to blend it in) leave for 5 mins or so, then wash out.

It seems to work. I hope that helps!
