Bleaching and dying hair

I would love to get a colour service done at a hair salon.

I have natural light brown ashy hair with no colour in it.

I would love to get the ends of my hair bleached to lighten the colour on my hair and then get a vibrant colour on my hair over the bleach.

Like this in the picture and get a ombre look on my hair from brown to yellow.

I would never attempt this at home and I would book in to a salon for this.

However I read online that bleach is damaging to hair. My main hair goals is to grow my hair long. So I am apprehensive in case my hair breaks off and doesn't grow long.

I would have thought going to a salon would be better than attempting such work at home.
Surely if bleach is so bad that it breaks hair and slows down growth, it shouldn't be allowed. I don't know.

Also I don't want anything high maintainance. This is a top priority because I won't be able to go back for regular root touch ups.

Would I be able to grow something like this out?

Can anyone help advise me please.

If something like this would prevent me from my main goal of growing hair long, then I don't want it.

Also how much would something like this cost me. I have a budget of 300 pounds.

If you find a good salon they can use treatments like Olaplex to make sure minimal damage is done to your hair.

Once the bleaching has been done, you won’t need it redone but you may need to top up the yellow (could do quite easily yourself at home).

The yellow will be a semi permanent dye so fades with washing. But reapplying semi permanent is not damaging.

You can also buy masks and treatments to use at home to keep your hair in good condition.

It would probably be classed as a balayage and toner. Near me that would cost around £160 and then however much a cut and/or blow dry costs.

I would recommend finding a salon you like the look of and booking in for a consulation 😊

My mail goal is to grow my hair long so I am already looking after my hair very well and it does look good in its natural colour. I can continue getting maybe a colour mask to use on my hair weekly.

I have a hairdresser already that I go to for hair trims and he is good and colour. I already had a trim a few weeks ago so I don't need another trim.

I would love to get my hair done like this and then to also keep my hair healthy as well at the same time.

Would bleaching and colouring my hair like this jeopardise my hair goal of achieving length? I really want to get long hair and I think I should be able to get to my goal of healthy bra strap length hair within the next year. Currently it's armpit length.

I know that for example Schwarzkopf have a mask that is also a yellow dye to top up the colour while repairing bonds at the same time.

Any professional hairdresser should be able to achieve this using low developer bleach. To grow your hair it is important to make sure you are getting enough vitamins, iron etc as well as using hair products.

My advice is go to a reputable salon and ask for their head colourist. £300 would definitely cover it I would say unless you're going to Chelsea or something!

If you're looking to grow out your hair you might want to avoid doing it. I have highlighted bleached hair that I've been getting done for years and after a certain length it will just start looking a bit limp. Died blonde hair tends to look thicker and healthier at collarbone length and above in my opinion.

If you're wanting low maintenance and no root touch ups bear in mind you'll need the dark top colour touched up if you've got light brown hair, otherwise you'll end up with a 3 part colour: your colour, the dark and then fading into the yellow colour.

Also be aware that you will have to have the bottom section solid bleached (not like highlights where the damage would be considerably less) nearly white to obtain a bright colour.

Dyed**

This is my hair currently.

I don't want to do anything to the top of my hair. I want to keep that colour and do an ombre from the middle down to my ends. If it's at all possible.

With a buttery, sunflower yellow at the ends.

Ah ok so your natural colour at top and yellow at bottom? Your outcome will likely look a bit like the first pic I've posted rather than your inspo pic as there's not the dark/yellow contrast.

It still stands that if you're after that very bold yellow at the bottom you will definitely need it dyed solid bleach at the ends to lift to the bright yellow. This will inevitably impact the health of the ends, which in turn could affect your chances of growing it long.

If you want less potential breakage/damage then I'd suggest you'd go for something a little more subtle and natural that they'll be able to achieve by balayage which won't be the block full bleach coverage on your ends if you get me? (See second pic!) - and v low maintenance

Yes, I think this will look good and is easily grown out. The bleach will only be on once. It’s when people have highlights etc and top ups that strands can be bleached over and over again and can break. As a one off, yours will be fine and the yellow colour can be topped up and will make your hair look shinier when properly maintained.

Thank you for all of your replies.

This is something that I would love to do toy hair and I wanted to do this for a few years. This is not a new want or thing for me. I just adore the colour yellow. This is something that I badly want to do.

I am now undecided. I understand that my hair will be bleached and it will have to be bleached very light.

I will never work with hair bleach at home and I presume it would be better at a salon.

This is a picture of my hair from last summer.

My hair is just so thin and fine. There is an improvement since last summer because I was disappointed with a mother big trim last autumn but the bad, uneven ends had to come off. Since then I was my hair about twice a week and with every hair wash I use a hair mask instead of conditioner and I think that helped my hair.

I am anxious my hair might go back to being thin and straggly again.

My mail goal for my hair is length and achieving health in my hair. There is an improvement since last summer.

I would love to get my hair to be like this yellow. I thought about it for months that going half way down the length and going for an ombre look would help me achieve no harsh regrowth and it would be low maintenance.

Bleaching can take multiple sessions though. Depending on what level you need to reach to have the colour you want.

OP if your goal is long healthy hair then bleaching it is the worst thing. My hair grows fast and it’s barely grown at all during my bleach journey. I’ve invested in fantastic products now and it’s finally growing but it’s whether you have the time and money to invest.

Could you not look into extensions and have the extensions dyed yellow? Then the hairstylist can still lighten your hair and do a balayage to blend it in with the extensions.
