Selling clothes on Vinted? Any tips? (Assume better than eBay)

I have a few clothes I’m thinking of selling. All very good condition, a couple of brand new things. Plus an Orla Kiely handbag.

I am always years behind the times. Should I try Vinted? Any tips please?

(I dont think eBay is much good for clothes, am I right in thinking, though I have sold a couple of handbags there in the past).

I sell lots on vinted probably 3-4 items a week. Id say good photos, on hangers, be open to offers and list little and often. I try to upload a few items a few times a week.

I’ve just listed a few things there this week for the first time. My main observation is how low you are advised to set the price. I have a brand new with tags dress which cost £40. I listed it for £10 and have so far had 2 offers of £7 and £8! Have managed to sell kids bits so far for £3 each, I paid way more for these types of items on eBay a couple of years ago. People very much go to vinted looking for a bargain so you may be disappointed by how much you can get.

it’s very easy from a postage and admin point of view though, you just list how much you want, the buy plays that plus the vinted fee plus whatever postage they want, you then just print the label and drop off at the right shop. Much easier than calculating your own postage and adding it on.

@modgepodge If you haven't got a printer, can you get a QR code from Vinted to use at a delivery shop? Thank you

CrestFalcon · 21/03/2024 14:55

Thanks all.

re. low prices a bit 🙁 about that. Not so bothered for stuff I’ve had a bit of wear out of but I have a brand new pair of M&S jeans (£45) I bought a couple of months ago - too small - I never did lose that weight 🙄! Maybe I should hold on to them just in case eh …

But I shall have a try …

I've made a few hundred quid this year selling my things on Vinted. Good clear photos, ironed, good lighting, on hangers etc. I take my pics by a window for the good natural light. Write in the listing and add pics of any marks on the item because even if it's tiny tiny tiny they will notice and they will try to get a refund etc. Someone tried to get a refund because there was some fluff on a jumper I sold once. Be prepared for some wild offers of £1/£2/£3 for things worth far more. People do expect you to be short changed so they can get a few quid off or it makes their postage costs basically free etc. I've stopped accepting offers on things £5 and under because a lot of things I'm selling are still a bargain a that price. Sometimes you just have to wait for the right buyer. I manage to sell most of what I've listed within a few days and then leave the rest up for a month. If not bought by then it goes in the charity clothes bank.

The shipping is very easy. I use Inpost, bag it up take it to a locker and send it off to its new home.

That makes a lot of sense @mirl . Holding out for the right buyer for a few items too.

I need to clear out/reduce some of my wardrobe slowly

Some good tips. I also sell things regularly. You do have to be realistic about prices though currently M&S new with tags jeans between 3-£15.
Think If Vinted as a great way to shift clothes If you sell cheaply. And if you have lots to sell it will soon add up ££!

CrestFalcon · 21/03/2024 15:09

That’s a big hit on the jeans @JennyfromtheBlok ! I am going to be really careful what I buy new from now on - I do have a wardrobe I feel fairly ‘complete’ with now so that helps 😀

I’ve been selling on Vinted since about November and am currently standing at having made about £200.
I know I sell stuff too cheaply but the way I look at it is that it’s making nothing sitting in my wardrobe/bagged up, it’s all clothes that are now too big for me and I have no intention of putting the weight back on!
I take plenty of photos and always have one photo of the size label, I always hang the item up and take photos in natural light. Now and then, I delete a few listings and add them back a couple of weeks later, this seems to restart sales when they’ve been a bit slow.
As for offers, if I think someone is being a bit cheeky, I will decline but do so politely, sometimes stating the price I want is a bargain.
Pack stuff really well, I buy clothes bags from Amazon.
I always notify the buyer when I’ve sent their purchase and usually send the same day/next morning.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 21/03/2024 15:16

As a buyer I really appreciate the length of clothing being listed, I will always ask as there's no way to tell if a top is short or a tunic by the photo.

It needs to be cheap as I'm taking a risk ,so even if you did pay £45 for your jeans I'm not spending anywhere near that as they might be useless to me so a tenner is about right, especially once you've added the insurance and the postage.

I love buying from Vinted ,have had some really good bargains.

CrestFalcon · 21/03/2024 15:25

I agree @MrsPelligrinoPetrichor re. risk - except in the case of my jeans you could literally try them on in M&S now to see if they fit haha. Oh well lesson learned I guess.

@CrestFalcon I recently sold a pair of BNWT John Lewis jeans for £10 that were originally £45. I wanted £15 really but took £10 as they weren't making me any money just sat in my wardrobe! So I would say £10 sounds about right as rember the buyer also pays postage and fees so they are paying more like £15.

I find for adults then m and s, John Lewis, Boden, joules and seasalt all sell really well for me. for DC clothes things that sell well are Boden, frugi, m and s, jojomamanbebe. I have 4 children so sell alot of kids clothes!

I also put from a smoke and pet free home (if that applies to you) and I also bulk buy parcel bags from Amazon and usually post same or next day

It's worth looking at hat postage options suit you and only offer the ones that are near you so it's easier for you.

Not sure. The buyer chooses the postage method, when they chose evri it let me print at the shop, when they chose in2post i had to print a label, though that may just have been because the closest one to me is a locker - possibly if I’d gone to a different location where it was a shop it may have given me the option to print at the shop.

@modgepodge Thank you 🙂
