I think I'm having a Geri Hallwell moment...

(not the husband problem!)
I generally wear 'practical' colours as I work in Special Ed with small often grimy children..plus paint, playdough etc. So I wear a lot of navy, and black.

But I'm 56, going grey and they make me look haggard.
This morning, I randomly put on a creamy white sweater with my jeans, and realised I looked much better.. less old, and my hair looked brighter. Tried on a white shirt I never wear.. same again.

Now I want a lighter wardrobe (to mostly go with jeans at work)! But I always believed that when you have grey hair you 'need' to wear bright colours (which just isn't me)

I'm note sure white is going to be practical at work, but really wanted to ask if others going grey have any 'light looks good' suggestions, or how to restyle myself! (5 ft 7 size 10 never ever wear dresses)

Could you get your colours done?

I had the shock of my life when a selfie, taken in a field in Winter, told me that my ancient but beloved dark grey Jil Sander coat suddenly made me look awful with my new lockdown salt and pepper hair. I looked like a scarecrow. Navy is now too severe and humourless. (I tend to avoid black as it feels too City for my current life.)

Since then I’ve been building a small wardrobe of ivory coloured knitted dresses - from places like Loulou Studio, Co, American Vintage - and indulging my obsession with beautiful and colourful knitwear from La Fetiche.

Strangely, (and statistically this probably won’t be the same for you) I’m finding that brown is the colour I’m turning to most. In 60 odd years I’ve only worn it twice before: once as one of three colours in a poncho when I was eight, and again in a luxurious thick cotton Stella McCartney top with a gold zip (circa early 2000s, pre-grey hair) worn until it wore out. How I mourn its loss now. I’m currently leaning heavily on a brown Uniqlo hoodie and a rich brown Fair Isle (La Fetiche) with a multicoloured yoke. They just seem to work - with my hair and skin and, wonderfully, most of my wardrobe. (I have tried camel but it makes life feel pointless!)

Just experiment - and have fun with your new appearance.

I can’t do dark colours at all! The older I get, the worse it looks.

white dresses, white blouses, white shirts! I love white!!!

Oh I never thought of this. I’m 55 and grey. Not even a nice steely grey. I wear far too much black.
