How do you wear SPF without getting it in your eyes

I know the answer seems obvious - don't put it on your eyes. But I don't go close to my eyes and it seems to always get in them and leaves me with stinging, watery eyes all day.

I have both facial sunscreen and BB cream with SPF in, either of them do this.

Any tricks to avoiding it? Is it the product or my application?

It's the type of sunscreen. P20 for example, does not do this. It's also a great baselayer.

OP you might be allergic to one of the ingredients, or have some sensitivity. I use spf very near my eyes and on my eyelids, and don't get irritated eyes at all.

Maybe try a different brand, or one for sensitive skin? I use the La Roche Posay, but some people find it irritating so it totally depends on the person.

Thanks! I'd better get to Boots and start dabbing things in my eyes...

I very much have this problem... no pain like it!!
This might not suit you, but Nivea high factor sun cream for kids in the spray bottle the green one that changes colour.
I think it is probably made not to sting when it gets in your eyes but it's great for that reason... I wish all sun cream was like that because I have that issue also.
I need to apply it very close to my eyes.

I have this problem! The clarins facial SPF doesn’t do this to me. My eyes have been super sensitive to so many SPFs and this is the only one I’ve discovered that I can consistently use.

Gruum doesn't sting my eyes.

I bought a Bondi Sands one and was very careful not to get near my eyes but the stinging was still there an hour later and after washing my face! Terrible stuff.

I’m pretty new to sunscreen because I’m old and I didn’t really know it was now a ‘must’ until I started retinoids.

I’ve tried three or four and they all do this. Its miserable. I asked my go-to skincare brand (Pai) and they said try putting a bit of neutral cream (not vaseline) right next to your eye as a barrier. I tried it with some Avene cicalfate and it worked although I’m not sure how my eye skin will like it long term.

Bigger for me is the awful and instaneous acne I get if I put sunscreen my chin 😩.

emmylousings · 18/03/2024 12:54

I get this, its actually agony and it makes you look awful, like you've just had a massive sob!
Following with interest, especially looking for cheaper brands that are good for us sensitive types?!

lovehatesummer · 18/03/2024 14:27

Definitely the product!

If you're interested in Korean sunscreens, I switched to Beauty of Joseon and it doesn't sting my eyes (was using Thank You Farmer before that and while I loved the texture, my eyes would be watering as soon as I put it on).

poetryandwine · 18/03/2024 14:47

I have this problem too, OP. Sadly P20 facial sun cream which I otherwise love is one of the worst for my eyes.

LRP Anthelios (sp?) facial sun creams and the new Boots own brand hydrating sun cream for sensitive skin (SPF 50 *** and very well priced) are good choices for my eyes as well as my skin.

NeedWineNow · 18/03/2024 14:50

I had this on our last holiday with Lacura (Aldi) sunscreen. My eyes were streaming and very sore. I ended up using my Clinique City Block spf25 around my eyes instead.

I'm quite a big fan of Boots No. 7 products so have bought their facial sunscreen and the lip/eye stick which you can use around the eyes which hopefully will be okay. I'm planning to use it in the garden to test before we go away, assuming that we actually have some sunshine that is!

MorrisZapp · 18/03/2024 15:16

Every year they bring out better, more modern sunscreens. Beauty editors rave, finally a wearable SPF they all say.

And they still sting like hell. I don't believe in any that say they don't.

Definitelylivedin · 18/03/2024 15:19

Definitely use a specific facial sunscreen. I use Vichy, but La Roche Posay works well too.

DonnasShrugaleros · 18/03/2024 15:20

Ultrasun face works best for me and my sensitive eyes. That P20 was the worst I found!

PJ04JCW · 18/03/2024 15:26

I have this problem, but I find B protect defence 50 from Superdrug doesn't sting. It's £15 but on BOGOF at the min

Margaritavillee · 18/03/2024 16:42

Korean sunscreen is the best for avoiding this. The Cosrx aloe Vera one is great

Talisin · 18/03/2024 17:04

One of the main reasons I have stuck with Biore Watery Essence is no stingy/runny eyes. Everything else I have ever tried, my eyes turn into waterfalls. Not the European version they sell in Superdrug though, has to be the original imported one.
