Glasses online?

Spencer0220 · 16/03/2024 19:06

Would you buy glasses online?

I need an at home eye test due to disabilities.

They can only bring a few frames for me to choose from.

Would you buy online?? Any tips and advice?

I love bright, bold, big frames. Think Sue Perkins, but colour/pattern. I'm just concerned I'll be stuck for choice.

I bought prescription sunglasses online. Love the frames and the prescription is fine but the arms are too long so they slip down my nose annoyingly. I've tried many unsuccessful efforts at bending the stems but it just doesn't work and nowhere will fix them for me. So I wouldn't risk my every day glasses.

Thank you @PuneorPlayonWords

I think I'll see what they bring and go from here

Yes!
Glasses direct will seen you 5 pairs for a week to try on for free. You return them all and say which you like - no obligation to get any. And they’re quite cheap too!

GettingStuffed · 17/03/2024 07:56

Do you have a simple prescription? Once you get into the realms of stronger lenses and bi/varifocals they're no cheaper than from an optician who will ensure they fit properly.

I've used Glasses Direct for a couple of years now and never had any issues. You order 4 pairs to try from the site, get them and show them to friends, family, multiple mirrors etc, then order if you actually like them enough. I've got about 9 pairs now in all different colours and styles to suit looks and outfits.

I also sent a pair back once as I felt the vision was weird and there were no issues returning either.

I always buy from Pretavoir. No issues and very quick turn around compared to other online stores.

If its Specsavers coming out to you, they have a handy function on their website which allows you to "try" on the frames at home. You just take a 3d photo of your face and then use a bank card as a measure ( sounds weird but it works ) and then try on the frames. You can find a few that you like and ask them to bring those

Our Specsavers are very good at accommodating the needs of those that need home visits

fancyfrogs · 17/03/2024 08:12

I've had 2 pairs from glasses direct and no complaints whatsoever. Easy to order some on the free trial first to try properly then ordered and sent pretty quickly.

RampantIvy · 17/03/2024 08:20

No, but I have astigmatism, wear varifocals and need my lenses thinning due to extreme short sightedness. Oh, and I have a small head, which reduces my choices significantly.

Varifocals have to be precisely measured and fitted so I would never buy online.

Mairzydotes · 17/03/2024 08:43

I've bought from Selectspecs several times. I found them to be fine.

WeRateSquirrels · 17/03/2024 08:53

Agree with the Glasses Direct recommendations. It’s also helpful to learn what the three numbers printed on many frames mean - you can then use these to work out which ones are likely to fit.

LateMumma · 17/03/2024 09:45

I've used eyekeeper and glasses direct, both great and much cheaper

Thriving30 · 17/03/2024 09:52

Another vote for glasses direct!
It did take me a few free trials to find frames I liked but once I did no issues at all

mondaytosunday · 17/03/2024 09:54

Yes and it was fine.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 17/03/2024 09:57

No because I always need my frames to be adjusted, usually more than once, so they sit properly on my face and don't slip down. They're varifocals too, so, even more important that they fit right.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 17/03/2024 09:58

I'm glad you asked this. I need some prescription sunglasses and was pondering Glasses Direct as I just don't have time to get to an optician.

Pigeonqueen · 17/03/2024 10:11

Depends on your prescription. I’m -9.50 with astigmatism and none of the online places will provide me with glasses as they say my prescription is too complex and things need to be measured in store. If you have a prescription that isn’t so high / complex I would absolutely go for it.

allmycats · 17/03/2024 10:19

Your prescription, if not a simple one, can affect your frame choice. ie if you have above - or + 3 a large frame with a standard lens will likely be quite thick in the lens. When you get into the - or + 7 range you generally need a smaller frame. Any bi or varifocals need careful measuring with the frame on your face. Take advice from the optometrist and/or the dispensing optician before deciding where to buy your spectacles as the actual prescription may need consideration when choosing the frame

Yep, it's them.

Hi , I got my eyes tested at my local optician and couldn't find anything I liked in their frames . I ordered frames from Cubitts to try . I think I got about 4 pairs and just returned the ones I didn't want . They returned my payment promptly . I can't remember if I paid postage to return . I then took my new frames to my optician who fitted the lenses . Obviously you may need to check if you have thicker lenses that might not fit all frames .
Although it was probably more expensive and a bit of a faff I really wanted a pair of frames that I loved rather than ones that would just do .
Hope you get sorted .

Shiveringinthecountry · 17/03/2024 14:42

I wouldn't. I recently bought varifocals online. When they came they were unusable. When I contacted the vendor they tried to tell me that varifocals will only have two points of focus (i.e. they were describing bifocals). I got a refund, but I've never had such rude customer service.

It might work for simpler prescriptions, but I wouldn't take the chance again.
