Ugh- going OUT

I am going out tomorrow night with old friends for the first time in a loooooong time. Like years probably. Don't get me wrong, I go to nice restaurants and to see plays and to people's houses but this is to a late night dancing pub - a naff, fun place that my best friend wants to go to and which I promised for her 45th birthday... almost two years ago 😳

We'll have a great time I'm sure but I feel very very old (46) and honestly don't really know what to do to look and feel like I'm going 'out' - any top tips? Plus what on earth shall I wear; I basically only own floral midi dresses!

Help!

I am size 12, 5'9. I have no shoes to wear! And all my clothes are for work. And I haven't worn eg foundation since before Covid. Bah

You've left us a bit late if it's tomorrow night! What will she be wearing? Is it just you two?

AuntieSoap · 16/03/2024 07:26

Are you asking if you should buy something new (today!)? Or work with what you've got?

If it's a pub, can you get away with dressing up jeans with a nice top? Depending on where you are in the country, trainers may be fine, or indeed preferable. I'd wear them in London, but not Liverpool for instance.

As it's tonight and as you don't do this often stick with finding something to wear amongst the clothes you already have. Don't bother with trying to look like those who do this often and focus on what you're happy with that doesn't feel like a costume.

Thank you all good advice (also - London, tonight, three of us).

I suppose makeup, hair and accessories can go a long way.

Nice hair certainly worth spending a bit of time on.
How are you at showing a tad more cleavage than you would in the office?

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 16/03/2024 08:36

Where do you live and do you have time to pop out to get something? What clothes shops are local to you? Sainsburys with Tu? You could easily get nicer jeans for out out and an evening top/t shirt.

Nice jeans/trousers and a dressy top is perfect. Casual trainers or heeled boots. Hair and makeup. Big earrings maybe.

What do you have?

tempnameforadvice · 16/03/2024 09:49

Flora midi dress, box fresh trainers (supermarket own are fine!), big hair, big earrings. Done

Maddy70 · 16/03/2024 10:25

Jeans top. Cool boots/shoes

AuntieSoap · 17/03/2024 11:18

Did you have a good night OP? What did you wear in the end?

custardlover · 17/03/2024 19:11

Thank you so much for all the advice! I found an old dress in the wardrobe (black and green for St. Patrick's Day) and I leant into good makeup and hair and I felt good in the end.

The place was awful! And we were easily old enough to be everyone else's mum! But that was a separate issue- I think my friend was having a serious mid-life denial crisis but going to the terrible place shook her out of it and I think next time we'll go to a nice restaurant where we can hear ourselves think, don't have to deal with sticky tables or vomiting young women in the loos.

But my hair and makeup looked nice ;-)
