Does anyone have recent experience buying luxury items on eBay?

My adult son wants to buy a luxury second hand Rolex watch from ebay. I have strongly advised him against it, but he feels determined. The watch is still expensive (£8000 on ebay), but it would be £9500 on a site like WatchFinder. He received the money from his grandparents for his 21st.

He guarantees that ebay checks the item, and then he said he would take it to a rolex dealership to ask them to check it too and return it if it is a fake. Does anyone have experience with this?

  • Do Rolex dealerships even do this checking (he is refusing to call to find out, because "he knows best")? Surely they can't have time to check everyone's ebay purchases.
  • assuming Rolex say it's a fake, how difficult will it be for ebay to agree and return his money? What's the process? I've found ebay horribly difficult in the past with the smallest sums of money. What proof would he be asked to send. Imagine the seller dissappears, will ebay be ready to take the £8000 hit???

I worry because I imagine there are some excellent "professional" fakes out there. And the ebay checking team might not have the best knowledge- they can't be experts on every luxury product.

What makes matters worse, DS is buying in cash/debit card. He isn't approved for a credit card with that limit, so won't have the charge back protection if everything goes belly up.

Obviously he doesn't want to listen to mum. He has "read everything online", but doesn't want to speak to a real person. I don't want him to learn the hard way. My parents have been saving this money for him since he was a child 😪

Am I worrying over nothing? I also don't want to be the controlling mum, but I'll step in firmly if I have to. I just want some facts.

He needs to pay through PayPal rather than his debit card.
He also needs to find out how long it would take a service centre to authenticate, PayPal only give you protection for a certain amount of time ime.

Retail stores cannot authenticate your watch for you, but an Official Rolex Service Center can. These service centers are located in major cities around the world and are conveniently close to many people who own high-end watches.

Not a chance I would trust the item to be genuine.

queenofarles · 15/03/2024 16:22

but I'll step in firmly if I have to
please do, £8k is a lot to spend on something you’ve seen online .

what is the style? Submariner? Air king?

DirtyDensDog · 15/03/2024 16:31

Is it covered under the eBay money back guarantee?

JumpyCat · 15/03/2024 19:12

Thank you for the advice so far. He's seen a 2019 Submariner, and it is covered by the ebay guarantee. However, I'm not sure how easy it is to get the money back from ebay in a worst case scenario.

If it is a fake it'll be impossible to return

They'll just say he swapped the real one for a fake

Good point.

Ebay does not work like the previous posters have stated for luxury watches.
we have sold several and you buy the watch and it is then sent directly to an authenticator who either guarantees the watch as genuine or rejects it and it is returned to original owner and buyer is refunded straight away. The watch upon authentication goes to the purchaser via dhl.
The ebay process is excellent and authentication is excellent. I certainly would not worry about purchasing via ebay as it is such a stringent process.
The others posters clearly don’t know what they are talking about.

NHStoPrivate · 15/03/2024 19:51

I wouldn't touch eBay with a bargepole for anything expensive like this.

The advice you are being given on the whole is rubbish op.
For those who trade within the luxury watch market it is now operating one of the best buying and selling systems out there.

Thank you for your replies. DS mentioned the authenticator: I wasn't sure how stringent they are, for example their ability to spot really good fakes? Is the authenticator a genuine expert in Rolexes, for example. Will they look at the movement? Or is the authenticator just a generalist who only spots more obvious fakes?

But it sounds like they're good at what they do, from your experience?

Independent Rolex authenticators do the authentication. Ebay backed guarantee.
FYI Watchfinder is NOT the holy grail, we have previously been sold a stolen watch by them. They are not foolproof.

Rolex have approved used dealers now as you can't get new ones.

Which charge about 30% more than everyone else!

Nonewclothes2024 · 15/03/2024 20:25

He should be able to get one for £8000

Err, don’t think so.

Nonewclothes2024 · 15/03/2024 20:41

Goldsmiths are official pre- owned Rolex dealers.
You can get them for £8000

www.goldsmiths.co.uk/c/Rolex-Certified-Pre-Owned

I have done a LOT of research on this recently.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 15/03/2024 20:48

You might be able to get a rolex for that. However, if op is looking at paying that amount on ebay and £9500 on watchfinder, the watch which i have an idea of what it is CANNOT be purchased for £8000 in an approved dealer.
However, i am sure that you know best 🙄

If you knew a “LOT”, trust me Goldsmiths wouldn’t be your go to place.
