Eye bags!

I’m only mid 30s but mine are awful. Big with crinkly, crepey skin (I suffer from severe insomnia so they aren’t going away any time soon).

What do people use under their eyes that actually works? Either skin care or make up? Or potato’s or cucumber, I’ll try anything! Except for facial massage, I reckon I’d do it wrong and pull at the skin.
I got some under eye concealer but it looks so bad in my wrinkles so I can’t wear it. I just don’t want to look like I’m permanently exhausted (even though I am)

Im 48, have had a lot of sleep issues over the years, and have had some success with the following:

caffeine (I use the Ordinary serum and the Boots cream)

moisturiser or eye cream to keep the area as moisturised as possible - the Superdrug Vitamin E is a great basic eye cream, not too heavy so won’t make puffiness worse. I also just use my moisturiser.

Inkey List Brighten-I cream. It has a brightening peach tint that does make a visual difference. It claims to brighten the area over time. I am sceptical, but it’s a good cosmetic cream.

sorry, but gua sha or eye roller, kept in the freezer and used gently with a little light oil (again Superdrug vitamin e works for me). I watch Britta Beauty on Instagram for techniques. This feels great and makes an instant difference!

Daily meditation during which I focus on my third eye - I’m sure this has helped my 11s and relaxed all the little squinting muscles, including those that push the ‘eye bag area’ up and create tiny wrinkles there.

Make up: I’ve been doing some serious experimentation! You need colour corrector before or instead of concealer - either yellow, peach or both. It depends on your skin tone. My fave of those I’ve tried is Elf. Most of the yellow ones I’ve tried are slightly too light, but Elf’s peach one is great. Warm the product very thoroughly between ring fingers and smooth it on but only where it is needed, not over the whole area. You’ll find each eye is different. Then blot away any excess by pressing with a tissue. That will reduce creasing later in the day. You can then spot correct with concealer over the top. Use a soft, fluffy brush. Instead of powder use a setting spray.

I also use the lightest, pink Elf one very sparingly at the inner and outer corners and to lightly conceal redness on my lids, and a smidgen of L’Oréal’s illuminating one on the orbital bone to reflect the light up without creating panda eyes.

Have a look on Instagram at the ‘demi method’ for ideas - it seems to be an MLM thing but you can use any products and the concept around colour correcting is very good.

Also, try to wear colours that brighten your face, and groom your eyebrows. 😁

I think hydrating eye patches etc have their place too but my eyes get irritated very easily so I have to be careful.

hope this helps! Thanks for coming to my Ted talk!

😂 that is quite the Ted talk @Sussurations !

This is all amazing, thank you. I’m frightened of the gua sha, I don’t have one but I’m nervous about screwing it up. I’ll look into all your suggestions. Xx

I feel your pain OP.

Concealers on crepey eye bags will 100% make them look worse. I have a delightful mix of hollows, bags and darkness, but here is what I find helps.

Internal:

Less sugar (no sugar if you can)
Loads of water
Less salt
Little or no alcohol (still working on that one 😬)
Loads of different veg, so generally just being more healthy. Sorry!

External:

Facial massage. Honestly, I find the simplier the better. I have a gua sha, roller and even a Foreo Bear (microcurrent) but what I find works the best is a simple massage with cold pressed coconut oil. Do some pressure point work around your eyes (Google) Go gentle around your eyes, but set some time aside if you can. A good 5 or 10 minute massage will really help with brightening and de puffing a bit.

Eye patches. I use Grace and Stella, but leave them on for an hour, not the recommended 10/15 minutes.

Cerave eye repair

Bobbie Brown colour corrector. Get matched if you can.

I don't know if you want any advice with the sleep, but I am happy to help if you do.

Hydrate your body too, make sure you're drinking enough water.

Skincare wise I think a serum and then seal it in with an occlusive moisturiser - you may need to experiment a bit to find a serum moisturiser combo that works for you.

I think you’re dealing with various issues here, tbh.

one being the crinkled skin and the other one being the eye bags.

for the crepey skin: I personally love my reusable eye patches. I slather a watery gel serum on my under eyes and put the reusable silicon patches over them. And after about 15 minutes finish the whole thing up with my evening skincare regime and a fine coat of vaseline or aquaphor on my under eyes as an occlusive. It leaves me looking so much smoother and dewier. and concealer sits much better the next day.

I would be careful with the occlusive layer if you’re prone to milia btw.

most regular eyepatches unfortunately contain fragrances, which is why I prefer the “DIY” method.

puffiness: a cool roller, caffeine serums etc (as pp mentioned) may help. You really don’t need to spend a lot on a “jade” roller, btw. I have a super cheap one and it’s just as good as the fancy one I used to own (but accidentally dropped). The back of a cool spoon works as well!

I wouldn’t put ice cubes or anything frozen directly on my face, btw. That can lead to broken capillaries.

Are you also dealing with discolouration?

edit: the more holistic advice given by previous posters (hydration, sleep, sunscreen etc) is spot on as well, btw.
