Best hair straighteners?

After a recent visit too the hairdresser where they blow-dried mine pretty straight, I've decided I'd like to wear my hair straight more often. I currently leave it to air dry all the time, but as it's naturally wavy/curly it can look very untidy. I do like my natural hair but I really would like the option to have it straight when I fancy. (I CANNOT blow-dry straight myself, I am truly absolutely hopeless with hair and just need the ease of running straighteners through)

Which are the best hair straighteners, and do I really need to spend a GHD amount to get a good result? I have tried GHDs (borrowed a friend's) and I have to say I did love the effect. Very shiny and smooth, and I'm fairly cack-handed so if even I could get them to work, that's a bonus. But I'm a bit cash-strapped! Happy to save for a few more months to get the GHDs if they're going to give me the best result, as I don't want to waste a chunk of money on something that's not that great.

And if it IS GHDs, which are the best? I know they have different types, and different price ranges. My friend's were a pretty pricey one, I think they were called Platinum? But I do know there are cheaper ones within the GHD range.

I straighten every day and haven't used ghd's in my life. Always used Remington a decent one would be £60 ish and that'll mean installments on Amazon if monthly money is tight. So they're half the price of ghd's/cloud 9's.

Get a decent heat protector spray as well.

Apparently GHDs are crap now! They stop working after a few uses. I have cheap remington ones and they've lasted me 10 years+. Make sure to use heat protector spray to keep your hair nice! I use got2be's guardian angel spray

IMO GHDs are worth it. My first pair lasted over 10 years, my second pair is on about 3 years and still going strong. If your hair is just wavy and you're only really using them to straighten and style, the GHD originals will be fine. I've heard Cloud 9s are good too but can't speak from personal experience. I've had Remington ones in the past, they weren't as good and they didn't last very long. Buy cheap, buy twice etc. Cost per use for my GHDs must be pennies.

ETA - I also heard the 'GHDs are crap now' spiel when I bought my second set. Not the case, in my experience

I've got the GHD platinum plus ones, they're brilliant! But I honestly do only use them to get the kink out of my hair after sleeping in a bobble so not sure I'm the best example 😂

My hairdresser uses cloud 9 and swears by them! Also really good for waving/curling hair too

Thanks everyone!

my hair is actually on the curly side of wavy and is pretty coarse… do I need a heavy-duty straightener?! I want smooth/sleek rather than poker straight though.

also, can anyone recommend a good heat protector spray?

Cloud 9 were set up by the people that set up GHD after they sold it. I have some and they are as good as the original GHD's and better then the new ones iyswim.

Recently bought Diva straighteners from Amazon after I told a friend I had just ordered new cloud 9s . I tried the Divas and sent the cloud 9s back without opening .
I have very thick curly hair and the Diva straighteners went through my hair exactly the same as cloud 9s I had previously ( my daughter pinched them for Uni )
Divas cost about 70 pounds . My cloud 9s were over 200 pounds.

Snoopysimaginaryfriend · 14/03/2024 14:33

If you want smooth and sleek rather than poker straight have you considered a straightening brush? I have only used relatively cheap ones but they’re still very good and I look ‘polished’ hair wise in five minutes

littlebirdieblu · 14/03/2024 14:41

My first GHD are still going strong after 10 years, my daughter uses them now. My new ones I've had 4 years and still brilliant.

yarnwitch · 14/03/2024 14:43

Have you considered something like the Revlon One Step or a straightening brush if you don't want poker straight hair?

I always see Remington recommended on these threads but I personally don't find them to be very good they always snag my hair and one pair blew up in my hand.
I have GHD's and whilst they don't feel perhaps the best quality for the money, they have lasted for years with daily use. The downside is you can't adjust the heat setting though (unless you can on other models)
Cloud 9 get recommended a lot but I haven't tried them personally.
Tresemme heat protector spray and V05 heat protector serum are both very good.

We just got John Lewis own brand straighteners after both GHDs gave up, £35 and my girls 18 and 13 love them

ScreenPrinting · 14/03/2024 17:05

Thanks so much again to everyone!

I feel like I’m SO cack handed a blow-drying brush isn’t going to be workable… are any of them suitable for total hair incompetents like me?!? I literally CANNOT blow dry hair, have never once successfully used a round brush with my hairdryer. I’m worried I’m just going to get tangled if I try to use a smoothing tool…

Straightening brushes are literally like brushing your dry hair with a hot brush. Because it doesn’t ‘clamp’ the hair it’s supposedly kinder despite the high temperature.
I’ve added a picture of the one I use

I converted from GHD to Steam Pods about two years ago.
much better for my hair and are fabulous in comparison to the GHD.

Wenttomowameadow · 14/03/2024 19:57

Isn't Dyson supposed to have a straightener out now?

Emmelina · 14/03/2024 20:03

My first GHD's I bought 18 years ago, they finally died a couple of years ago. I replaced them with a GHD platinum which is great.

uggmum · 14/03/2024 20:09

I have Dyson straighteners and they are great. Expensive but worth it.

I previously had GHD and cloud. But the Dyson are just so much better.

I think they are better for the condition of your hair and there is no dragging at the plates move.

John Lewis have them in store for you to try them out with no obligation to buy.
