What to wear in a luxury French hotel

We’re lucky enough to be invited to a French wedding in July, staying in a very glossy hotel for 3 nights. The other guests are mostly French.
I have a dress sorted for the wedding but wondering about the other days.
Hotel has a pool, lots of outdoor terraces for eating and drinking and a very fine dining restaurant.
Please help me look chic and stylish.
My usual holiday wear is short, T-shirts, Birkenstocks and jersey summer dresses.

Will it be in the south? If so, it might be very hot.

Is it near the coast?

You don't have to fit in unless you want to and obviously there is no one way that French people dress on holiday, particularly younger people. A few things to bear in mind are that in France it's fairly unusual to wear flipflops unless you are just about to get into or have just got out of a pool or a body of open water.

French style, generally, is 'unfussy' so if you are buying or choosing, for example, a bikini or bag, etc., a simple one is more likely to 'fit in' rather than one with fussy details.

I hope this helps?

Thank you @Jeannne92

Its not near the beach but in some very pretty countryside.
I can’t pass as chic French but don’t want to feel scruffy.
Normally I’d have breakfast in shorts and a shirt but think that maybe a wafty linen dress might be more suitable.
Im mid fifties, tall, 10-12 with no chest.

Honestly you’ll be fine in anything - scruffy would be dirty, or damaged clothes. I’ve been taken to places like this, and there is a whole mix of tastes and fashions. I was surprised at how little effort rich people make to be honest. The ‘glitzy’ style of hotel guests in movies, is not realistic, from my experience.

I agree! I've been lucky enough to stay at some fabulous hotels. I cannot recall once ever thinking "WTF" about what someone wears at breakfast. Most of the time I haven't even cleaned my teeth!

If I was so worried, I would pick a very simple set of interchangeable outfits, let's say white linen trousers (ironed) and navy/black t shirts. Hair up and off and sunglasses.

The reality is cut off denim shorts with a bikini top and Ted Baker throw on. With hair up and off and sunglasses.

What is “hair up and off”?

Id invest in some good sandals, a well cut maxi dress (not jersey) and a few combinations of trousers and tops.

I'm currently obsessed with 100 Stars dresses, they are beautiful. Perfect for wafting around elegantly in!

HaggisHhahaha · 11/03/2024 20:53

Up and off hair?

Up and off hair?

Really? Ok, tied back and off your face.

WhereAreWeNow · 11/03/2024 21:11

Wafty linen dress sounds ideal.

Lucky you. Sounds lovely.

ZebraTree · 11/03/2024 21:26

Unless I'm in the hotel restaurants (which will likely have a dress code published) then I don't don't any differently for a hotel than I would any other day in the same location/weather/activity.

Long, loose linen dresses in neutral, plain colours tick every box for me. Flat tan sandals, big glasses, big hat.

Thank you for the comments and reassurance that I’m on the right tracks.
I’ve got a couple of MeandEm dresses in my basket that look cool and wafty
