Dying your own hair

I currently have my hair coloured every 4 weeks, due to grey showing , one month its just the roots, next I have it combed through to mid lengths and ends and roots, it's costing approx £600 a year, which isn't a huge amount, however as iam trying to cut down, I see £600 as a holiday.
Has anyone had success with box dyes? Going grey is NOT an option at 51 iam just not ready to be grey.
My hair is an aurben/chestnut/redish colour, I love the colour and would want it as near as possible, iam worried what is on the box isn't what you get!!
Would it be cheeky to ask my hairdresser advice on the colour name/numbers? Iam not worried about the process of applying it, iam worried about looking like a bright orange aurangatang!!!
Any help/ advice appreciated 🙏

I have the same routine but I’d say only one in 4 do I do the whole head of colour. My hairdresser does the cut and blow only every 8 weeks. On the non cut and blow session, she pops the colour on my roots, covers with a plastic sheet and I wash off at home. It saves me a lot.

I would have a gentle word with your hairdresser and be honest with your thoughts. Could she do something similar? You get the salon quality then and could save £200 a year maybe?

That seems very frequent for dying your hair. I changed my mousy brown hair to dark red with my hairdresser. And I still didn’t need 4 weekly appointments. I then did it myself during lockdown and I thought it was fine. Looking back over photos, it really wasn’t.

but still that seems very frequent appointments. Could you ask about highlights or something so it would be less obvious when any greys grow in. Save you the root touch up at least?

I used Nice and Easy Light Auburn. My hairdresser was very understanding about tight household budget and gave me the code I needed.

I have had mixed results with permanent box dyes so I just use a semi-permanent every few weeks. I like the results and I don't think it's as damaging. Plus a lot less expensive than the salon.

Honestly after 4 weeks I have a grey/white stripe, don't you think if I could have it done less frequently I would!! Considering this post is about saving £££
