Make up lessons for over 40s?

I’m mid 40s and the make up I used to wear is just not doing it for me anymore. Though in truth, I’ve never been very good at make up.

I am time poor so don’t want to spend hours searching for and watching make up tutorials. I also want someone who can identify what works best for me without sticking to only one brand, so make up counters won’t work.

Has anyone done something like this and can you let me know what you did? I have, of course, tried googling for make up lessons in my area (London) but the tutors who pop up are so young that I don’t know if they will be any good at helping someone with ageing skin. One more thing - I am Asian British, which means that it has to be very shade inclusive.

Any ideas?

Have you tried YouTube tutorials. There are some good people on there who are enjoyable to watch. Michele Wang is really good or Everydayedit or Allfeisty.

Something not dissimilar did happen. It was accidentally solved by going to a make-up counter in a large London department store. I was very lucky when I later discovered the lady whom I had spoken to and been attended by was a trained make-up artist. She knew exactly what to do and was happy to teach me. It has worked well for her too, as I have her number and when I need something different I can go to whichever store she’s at and have another look created. Hope this helps.

This sounds perfect! Does she do private lessons? Are you able to share her details please? By PM if that’s better?

Thanks, but I need help with products as well as application. And I have so little time that ideally I’d like to do both together. Someone who can take one look at my face and say: this look will work for you, these products will work for your skin and skin colour, and this is how you put it on. Maybe it’s not a thing but I’d like it to be!

That looks like exactly what I need, thank you. Not offered in any London stores though.

Have you got a Space NK store near you? They have multiple brands and the staff have always been incredibly helpful when I have wondered in completely bewildered.

I had this issue when I needed to get my passport photo done.
I realised the next time I'd get one done, I'd be in my sixties and that I didn't want to spend ten years wishing I'd at least put on a bit of make up so I didn't look awful on my passport.

I hired a make up artist to come and do my make up and she walked me through it, giving me the right shades of foundation, concealer etc... so I didn't waste time buying stuff that only looked okay in the store, but not once I'd got home.
They turn up with ALL the make up and if you have the outfits you are going to wear with it they will make great suggestions for that.

First time, I just got her to do me a very subtle, everyday look.

She also knows all the trends etc.. about make up, so now I get her to come over once every year to eighteen months and she shows me how to do my make up so it doesn't look too dated.

Costs me about £60 a time, then I end up with a small shopping list of any bits I need to buy that is 100% right for me.

They are easy to find, as there are loads who advertise to do make up for weddings, special occasions etc..
