Just started getting fine lines. Help! Retinol not working

Liloand · 08/03/2024 00:38

Just turned 42. Didn't have any wrinkles till about 6 months ago. Then developed 3 on my forehead and have got 2 crows feet on each side. Not got 11s or bunny ones. I have tried microneedling, facials, facial accupuncture, nothing will get rid of them. I started using a retinol (Loreal or Olay depending on what is in sale) on my forehead but not making the slightest difference. Please does anyone have any advice? I bought some Frownies but can't put over the retinol as it takes so long to sink it. They are not deep wrinkles (yet) but I am desperate to get rid of them. I usually wear sunglasses if it is sunny which is why I think the crows feet are quite shallow. But I would like to get rid. Is there anything that works at this stage apart from botox?? Is there anything I can do to stop them getting worse? Many thanks to you 🙏

I hate to break it to you but you are 42 and unfortunately wrinkles will just start happening from now!
I dont think you can do much else except plastic surgery (and that always winds up looking terrible IMO).
Just stay out of the sun and embrace ageing.....it happens to us all, if we are lucky!😉

Liloand · 08/03/2024 22:21

Haha do's! I was hoping someone would post a miracle cure I hadn't heard of. You're right though, should probably just embrace it. X

Drink lots of water and use good pillow cases. The way you sleep can actually make some wrinkles worse. Wear sunglasses when it's sunny, nothing worse than squinting. Palmers skin therapy oil (I think works better than retinol).

UpsideLeft · 09/03/2024 02:28

L'Oréal or Olay won't do anything

You need stronger retinol

The Boots No 7 one is actually really good

Isitbedtimeyet3 · 09/03/2024 02:32

Botox is the only thing that will smooth out wrinkles. These other serums are not going to “fix” the issue but may help any treatments you have to last longer. Morpheus8 is brilliant if you have the budget for it, or Botox is the less expensive option. Age will get us all eventually though xx

barfotoliv · 09/03/2024 04:50

Just get the Botox.

Which one please?

If I win the lotto I will be booking this.
I saw a video on TikTok of the before, during & after. The results were amazing.

NotSoBetty · 09/03/2024 06:17

Embrace it your wrinkles! There’s nothing wrong with them, they add character to your face.

MasterOfNobody · 09/03/2024 06:18

Get Botox, I stared at 44 once I realised no cream or collagen supplement was making a blind bit of difference. I just wish I’d stared a couple of years earlier because once lines really mark your skin you can’t undo that. Although I was too late for my frown lines, my forehead lines and crows feet are totally gone. It is miraculous.

Botox

I have signed up to Dermatica.

As they analyse photos you send they adjust your creams and treatments in a much more personalised way than me repeatedly buying the latest cream.

For me, this has saved so much money, time and effort on ‘trial and error’.

I can stop/pause the subscription too as needed.

I've felt I'm in very safe hands as they slowly increase the strength of the creams and I've gone back to them quite often with queries or a change of focus.

Using the retinol cream I only buy quite cheap and straightforward moisturisers too ( currently VIT E from Superdrug). Of course I use a factor 50 sun cream. Retinol increases the shedding of my skin ( noted when I stopped very temporarily and re-started).

My skin has improved.

Some great offers too. (£2.90 for first month). Through the code I've listed or just generally from their site.

Have a read of the website and consider if this may help you,

Tretinoin is really good. I'd personally never get Botox. The shiny weird forehead doesn't look better than a naturally ageing one.

baileybrosbuildingandloan · 09/03/2024 09:54

My great aunt had skin that looked like crazy paving. She'd been a sun worshipper all her life!
She was beautiful till the day she died .

SicParvisMagna · 09/03/2024 12:54

I feel the same op. I’ve just signed up to dermatica but because I’m an idiot I’ve chosen treatment for acne not anti aging (suffered with zits all my life and it’s a hard thought process to break that I have acne prone skin). As I’m getting older though I only get hormonal breakouts but my skin texture is horrendous. I’m getting those lines from nose to mouth (naso labial ones I think they’re called) and I have a lot of pigmentation and sun damage/freckles. Also my chin skin looks like orange peel 😳
I had an email this morning to say they’ve done my personalised formula which is adapalene and niacinamide but that’s for acne obviously. So I’ve emailed them to say I’m an idiot, chose the wrong thing and can I have something stronger.
if not I have a consultation booked with a local esthetician in a couple of weeks and I might go for a touch of filler. Not sure yet. I’m 40 next month and freaking out about old j suddenly look 🤣

GremlinsTwo12 · 09/03/2024 13:02

You're getting older. Fine lines and wrinkles are inevitable.

I tried botox once and hated it and thought it made me look worse.

You can't stop ageing, it's a natural process. You will have to look older because you are.

Even botox, fillers, cosmetic surgery can't stop it. You'd just potentially 'good' for your age but potentially risk looking weird too.

Try and look your best of course if it pleases you but trying to eradicate fine lines and wrinkles will be an effort in futility.

Retinol is a long game so you'd not see anything for about 6 months anyway.

What percentage were they? @Liloand if the product doesn't give a percentage, but it's actual retinol, then it's likely to be about 0.3 which for a first time user, is fine. You could probably go up to a 1% now. If it was granactive retinol then you need to divide the stated percentage by about 10 to get the true percentage of active ingredient. So a product that states it's 1% but is granactive is really much much weaker.

I used retinols of varying strengths for about 3 years, then went up to Tret, but have now settled with retinAl which I'm sticking with.

I don't look in the mirror and see no fine lines. I'm 58. I look in the mirror and see the best skin for my age.

TimeForBedSaidZebadee · 09/03/2024 19:26

I had my first session of Polynucleotide skin rejuvenation today.
It's a new treatment but the research looks good.
I'll be having a second treatment in a fortnight. I've taken before photos and will start a thread with the results in a couple of weeks for anyone who is interested.
In the long run it's cheaper than Botox or fillers and seems to make a visible but natural difference.

Aviee · 09/03/2024 19:38

Botox before they are static.

BeaRF75 · 09/03/2024 19:40

Lines are normal in your 40s, OP. Just accept then and save yourself time, money and stress.

TheABC · 09/03/2024 19:44

I use the Ordinary serums to smooth out my lines and good sunscreen.

I don’t mind aging gracefully and I've heard horror stories about botox.

BusterGonad · 10/03/2024 03:20

I do think botox makes you look a bit weird, around the eyes it just pushes the wrinkles up to the lash line.
It certainly gives a unnatural appearance imo.

Vaseline - it fills in the cracks overnight
