How to un-frump

Inspired by the frumpy thread. Please can you help me understand what comfortable every day wear looks like?

Almost everything I own appeared somewhere on that list, and whilst I don’t mind too much, I’m wondering what an early 40s, mum of preschoolers/ babies with minimal time and a strong need to be comfortable should actually wear and look like.

Photos, links and examples particularly welcome….

I'm 40 have 2 small children. I wear jeans and fitted tops mainly.
I like outdoorsy clothes so mountain warehouse hoodies and coats. Comfy but not chavvy.
I quite like trainers these days and find sketchers good if you like walking.
In the summer I love sundresses and flip flops or denim shorts and fitted T-shirts.
I think keeping in shape helps you look less frumpy.

That all sounds fine @vanillaclouds, and similar to what I wear, but pretty much everything you list has been described as frumpy on the other thread.

I'm 40 with a 4 year old. I don't think I look super stylish but I definitely don't think I look frumpy (albeit I haven't read all the thread).

I wear a lot of sports gear when I'm at home mainly because I try to fit in little bursts of exercise where I can. For casual clothes, i tend to go with wide legged cropped jeans and high tops or boots. For work, a similar style trouser but with smarter boots. I generally tuck, or French tuck, any tops in and stick to simple shapes and colours. A good bra is helpful too.

I think it’s all in the styling, there are some interesting instagram accounts where they show you a set of clothes (thrown on and looking frumpy) and then the same set of clothes styled with a tuck, a belt, handbag, pair of shoes etc. Accessories can dramatically change an outfit.

i love stylebyclairelopez on instagram i personally think she gives really good and practical advice on how to wear clothes and how to style them.

Thank you @GoodlifeGlow - actually that account is interesting. And the tuck/french tuck isn’t something I’ve done for a couple of decades so again something to think about.

Start adding a few pieces to your wardrobe that really express your personality. I started buying far fewer clothes but much nicer ones. Cashmere sweaters, silk blouses, leather boots, good coats and scarves.
