To feel depressed after browsing Vinted? 😔

madeinmanc · 02/03/2024 11:39

I avoid social media but recently after trying to restock my wardrobe on Vinted I feel so depressed. Everyone looks amazing in their photos: amazing waist-to-hip ratios, flawless skin, lash extensions/lift, you name it...it even seems sometimes that everyone has a massive bust while still being a size 6 or 8. I'm pretty slim these days but as a result now have a relatively small bust 😬

I don't seek out these photos and came off Instagram a few years ago due to this but there's seemingly no avoiding it 😔

Be glad your bust is small, mine used to be but seemed to enlarge as I got older

Cheeesus · 02/03/2024 13:52

I guess it’s only the gorgeous ones that model the clothes, the rest just spread them out on the floor.

Also, I think it must depend on what you’re searching for. I’ve only seen a human modelling one item and that was a northface (for my daughter) that a 17 yr old was wearing.

ThewaytoAmarula · 02/03/2024 13:55

You must be a size 6-8 yourself if you're filtering by those sizes. I'm more like a 12 and I don't see that many people modelling the things I'm browsing. Also maybe I'm browsing less-glam brands!

SquashPenguin · 02/03/2024 13:56

Think I’m yet to see something even on a hanger let alone on a real person! 99% of items are a crumpled mess on the floor I swear 🤣

Cheeesus · 02/03/2024 13:56

Ah yes maybe it’s size that determines whether it’s people modelling them.

madeinmanc · 02/03/2024 13:06

Well, I was genuinely wondering if anyone else felt this way and it seems not, so it does seem to be just me 😅

Edited

OP so many of those pictures have had the shit filtered out of them, surely you realise?!!

ImnotadickheadIpromise · 02/03/2024 14:10

OP aren’t you the same person who was complaining size 6 jeans in Sainsbury’s were too large the other day?

Most of the stuff I sell on Vinted is a size 6-8 (some are 4s from when I was still struggling with an ED) and tbh they’re really difficult to sell. I have never ever altered my body in any of the images I use though and as I said upthread I only use the photos from the neck down where I’ve got existing pictures while wearing them.

Desdemona44 · 02/03/2024 14:17

I had the opposite experience on vinted recently looking at sandals.

So many people trying to sell sandals modelling them on their nasty Crusty hooves, it was an absolute horror show. It's like the algorithm went down a wierd rabbit hole of showing me more and more feet 🤢

madeinmanc · 02/03/2024 14:43

Oh no @Desdemona44, that sounds grim 🤮

I've just been browsing other things and not seen a human photo in a while, so the people who said it must have been the algorithm or what I was browsing are probably right.

OP aren’t you the same person who was complaining size 6 jeans in Sainsbury’s were too large the other day?

That was me but I just meant their sizes are inflated/extreme vanity sizes.

It sounds like you need to seek some emotional support, primarily with your self esteem and relationship with your body. Alternatively the book overcoming low self esteem is a good place to start, and it’s written by a doctor and is on the nhs recommended reading list. It’s essentially do it yourself cbt.

Grumblevision · 02/03/2024 17:58

I always think of the absolute waste of time it must be for people to get so dressed up to sell something. (Or at all, but my personal care consists of showering..... And moisturising when my skin gets dry, and putting lip balm on when I have a minute to sit in the car after I've parked up and I notice it sat there.) Vinted depresses me but because of the absolute fucktonne of crap people buy and then can't shift because that app is overwhelmed with people all trying to sell things... But I'm weird about stuff generally and a bit hoardy and I mend things, and seeing all that shite out in the world just does me in. The other day I stumbled upon a seller who was getting rid of SO MANY CDs that were from my youth, all a quid. I had to stop looking. It made me feel happy and sad and old and overwhelmed all at once. It's the weirdest app, when I think about it.

Precipice · 02/03/2024 18:02

I do feel a sense of woe browsing Vinted sometimes, but it comes from the vast numbers of people who post one-two photos of the item, with no fabric composition or size label showing (and the number of people who put up items as X where the tag shows otherwise without providing justification is not small) and absolutely no measurements at all.

LividBath · 02/03/2024 18:03

You need to aspire to be fat and old like me.

Vinted keeps trying to make me look at M&S blouses and Mountain Warehouse cagoules in size 18. Blessed lack of modelling up this end 😒

AtomicBlondeRose · 02/03/2024 18:06

I’ve gone down sizes and you get this way more in the size 6 listings than the size 12! Also, many of them are literal teenagers so you’re always going to feel haggard and old next to them. I buy work wear and jumpers which people don’t usually model but for small size party dresses and tops it’s rife!

ObliviousCoalmine · 02/03/2024 18:08

This is nothing to do with how other people look, and entirely about how you feel about yourself.

TheOccupier · 02/03/2024 20:48

bloom19 · 02/03/2024 12:49

Vinted? What are you looking for, most of the pictures I see are just clothes, no one wearing them

Same, and on the rare occasion I do find a photo of a person they look dreadful and put me off the clothes!

Exactly what I thought!

I agree, and the people who do take photos of themselves wearing clothes usually look ridiculous with daft pouty lips and stupid poses 😆😆

hoopjumper · 04/03/2024 10:35

I think a lot of those photos have have been filtered to fuck. (I always imagine it's dirty old men buying those clothes....)

Having said that there are a million beautiful young things out there, you probably are too, otherwise you won't bother comparing yourself with them and you'd find other things to occupy your time.

Meant kindly and luckily by someone who didn't have to grow up with SM & filters, If you have poor self-esteem/body image then the best thing to do it step away from your phone.

madeinmanc · 04/03/2024 11:03

Sadly I'm neither young nor beautiful! 😅

If anyone has not been seeing these photos, try searching dresses in a size 6 or 8.

Off-topic, but I saw someone describe a top as "original vintage, my Mum owned it in the 00s" yesterday.

OP posts:
INeedNewShoes · 04/03/2024 11:13

But if you're not the same size as the models, why are you searching for clothes in that size?

When I go on Vinted I search for clothes in my size from brands where I know that size fits me so I'm unlikely to see someone modelling it who looks so incredibly different from me.

Branster · 04/03/2024 11:19

OP I don't know what pictures you see on Vinted to make you feel disappointed.
I'm a 6 so my searches are mainly for size 6 sometimes 8, depending on what I'm looking for.
Most items are not modelled by the owner.
Some include a holiday/party snapshot of standard looking people. Nothing to make anyone feel bad about their own looks whatsoever.
The rest are modelled by teenagers with filters (99% of the time with filters).
I always skip teenagers because I have zero confidence in quality of items and I suspect they don't look after clothes. Especially as there's always an awfully messy room in the background. Besides, they wouldn't sell silk for example, or brands I'm interested in.
I've never seen a gorgeous photo of a modelled item. I did see awful photos of really poor hair, makeup and too tight clothing - definitely not something anyone should ever aspire to.

Now, Depop is another story 😁 Amongst normal stuff or no models, teenagers pouting etc, there are some really questionable perfected staged photographs of 20 something year olds which I am convinced it's advertising for a specific industry. Depop is way overpriced but great for youngsters buying and selling cool stuff - I'm not one of those and don't use the platform anymore.

Have you tried eBay? It's easier to navigate and better protection as a buyer, but a bit more expensive. No silly photos on there.

Really most imagery online is altered.

thedevilinablackdress · 04/03/2024 11:28

I saw someone describe a top as "original vintage, my Mum owned it in the 00s" yesterday

Well, 20 years is about the starting point for vintage. Just the same as me in the 90s viewing 70s gear as vintage. How time flies!

madeinmanc · 04/03/2024 11:33

But if you're not the same size as the models, why are you searching for clothes in that size?

I am that size, it doesn't mean I look anything like them, though 😔

OP posts:
madeinmanc · 04/03/2024 11:36

Oh well, as someone pointed out I guess these people must be to some extent self-selected, as in they know they look good and that sells, just as a photo of me would be more likely to have the opposite effect
