Can I just dye my grey bits?

I'm 35 and have recently started to go very noticeably grey around the top of my face and around my temples. But I don't really have any greys anywhere else.

I really like my natural brown hair colour - it's in good condition and I've never dyed it. I'm really reluctant to dye my entire head - is it a thing to just have the front grey bits dyed? 😅I'd like to get it done at a salon and not sure what to ask for? I don't really care about going grey as such, it just looks a bit untidy being sort of partially grey.

Yes but I'd just buy a diy colour and do those bits at home. I wouldn't pay for a root touch up

I bought box ones, 1st time I did it all, the next time just the roots. I was concerned there would be 2 shades of colour… you can’t tell…. So that’s what I will carry on doing. I was going to buy the permanent root touch up, but that was more than the box, so went for the cheaper full box.

It's roots/regrowth if you want it done in a salon but like PP, I'd just get a box dye and do it yourself. You'll likely need it done every 6-8 (or 4 if you're like me) weeks, so won't want to be spending a fortune and a couple of hours every month or so when it's quick and cheap to do at home.

Thanks everyone, I was thinking about just dying the grey sections with box dye but worried about picking the right shade that will blend with my hair colour. I guess I'll just have to take the plunge...

When you look at the pictures and try to choose a colour, choose two shades lighter than you think you need. I guarantee you think your hair is darker than it really is.

Go to a salon and get a semi permanent colour. They will mix it to match your natural colour and it’ll stick more to the grey than to the brown. My stylist said don’t use permanent dye until your hair is over 50% grey.

Clairol does a root beer touch up, might be what you need and more foregiving on colour matching.

Dreamegg · 01/03/2024 23:19

@Lumiodes This might be a stupid question but does semi permanent just wash out completely?

Hi , you could also use something like Colour Wow root touch up . It costs about £25/30 and is brushed on. It usually lasts on me until my next hair wash . It is very easy to use and takes out the faff of constantly dyeing .

I have a lot of grey and go to the hairdresser every 6-8 weeks and I use it on my roots in between .

The colour range isn't extensive . When I used brown ones I found them quite dark - so it can end up looking a bit "flat ". I found the red worked on my blonde hair really well but I think from memory I had other lowlights through as well .

Root touch up powder or just dye the grey parts with Clairol root touch up permanent dye. So basically yes you can!

It doesn't wash out completely but it does wash out on fewer washes than the permanent one. I go to Savers and buy Schwarzkopf' tint' for my roots. I only use half the bottle but it's only £2 !

My hair is like this

i use a blonde cassia (from it’s pure) once a month, it makes the few white hairs I have blonde and it blends in with my light brown hair

i am allergic to “real” hair dye so can only use this

ColourByNumbers88 · 02/03/2024 08:04

I use a Clarol natural instincts (semi perm). You could apply it with a make up brush to be very specific. But first try John Frieda Defy Grey shampoo - it's very effective for toning down the greys. Less harsh on the hair.

No. They fade gradually but they usually slightly bleach your hair so that the colour takes.

I use Clairol Root Touch Up and would recommend it. If you are worried about colour matching you could get the roots done at a salon and ask them for the shade number then match that to the Clairol Root Touch Up. For example I am between an 8 and a 9 do use 9 in the summer but 8/8.5 the rest of the time. Even if the dyes at the salon are a different brand, the colour numbers should correspond.
