Has anyone ever wondered what to wear for a car boot sale?

..because the latest what to wear in The Guardian is what to wear at a car boot sale. I mean I understand the need for what to wear for interviews, weddings and the like but a car boot sale? The items they have picked total up to £300 + 😂😂

I can only imagine Guardian readers have sartorial anxiety 😁

I hope the £300 outfit includes several pairs of socks, thick boots, plenty of layers, a breathable windproof coat with a hood, and thin gloves that make it easy to handle cash.

My last car boot was in a muddy field in Norfolk. I'll give it a miss next time.

Brilliant!

In my case I would prioritise warm, windproof and waterproof clothes - practicality over style. No-one looks at what you are wearing at these events.

Bloody hell. Guardian reaches new level of crazy.

It must be a slow fashion news day.

😱😱😱

I like the suede mules, but not for something potentially in a field 😂

The concept is is hilarious - event shopping for a car boot sale 🤣

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 01/03/2024 09:10

So it’s not a wolf fleece and wellies and jeans from the 1990’s then?

mondaytosunday · 01/03/2024 09:53

Jeez people - think of the poor fashion writers who have to think of a new hook every week. Car boot is at least very accessible- you'd be up in arms if it said 'what to wear on a weekend shoot'.

MorrisZapp · 01/03/2024 09:56

Oh but I absolutely love that bag! Been wanting something similar for ages.

LunaNorth · 01/03/2024 10:34

Suede mules. For a car boot sale in the UK in March.

They're not even trying, are they?

I take it this is a 'London' boot sale in a tarmac car park that is attended by wealthy 'frugal' people looking for lightly worn designer goodies.

Not a usual boot sale in the middle of a muddy field attended by a mix of traders, people on limited money, bargain hunters and thieves.

The standard dress for the second sort is a tight money belt, thick socks and boots, many layers and nothing that makes you look like a middle class mummy that can be scammed or stolen from 'because you don't need the money'

Just came to say the same. I have a friend who photographs there regularly. I would dress up to the nines to go there but a local boot sale in my rural part of Herts would be wellies and layers. No point in fashun when you're knee deep in cow pats.

It’s so funny in terms of scrambling around on a tarp on the ground or table used for painting and decorating in an outfit which costs ££ for stuff at a knock down price! I like The Guardian, but this just tickled me.

The cost of the third outfit is over £700!

I doubt the overlap between people who enjoy "nabbing a bargain" and spending £23 on lip gloss is particularly hight...

tbh while i note the point they might be talking about a very specific type of london based posh "boot" sale rather than the muddy field, "20p or make me an offer" type most of us think of, are there even many of those now that vinted/vestiaire etc are so prevalent?
