Growing our highlights

I've always been natural blonde but progressively darker to a mousy shade early 40s. I've always had highlights but due to COL I just cannot afford them, it's over £100 cheapest here and roots show after a few weeks. How do I grow them out without looking a complete mess?

Could you just put a light brown semi-permanent on all of your hair? It wouldn't really change the natural brown if you chose a close match, but would darken and blend the blond.

Get a root smudge done at the hairdressers and then you'll be able to just leave it to grow out

I would be careful with these semi-permanent dyes OP. I tried the same thing. I now have a gingery hue to my hair and now will have to spend a fortune getting some highlights and toner put back in. Despite choosing a so called cool tone. A darker colour is okay to do this with but any light brown or blonde shades have peroxide and lighten so you get the ginger look.

Best thing you can do is once you have a good amount of regrowth. Get balayage instead. They will be painted on to minimise the difference between the regrowth and the highlighted hair. You can then continue to grow it out.
