Skincare routine for almost 50 year old skin

Monr0e · 24/02/2024 09:42

I've never been a particularly girly girl but as I'm getting older I'm finding I'm putting a bit more effort in! So I'm not very knowledgeable on all things style and beauty.

I've noticed some faint brown spots developing on my cheekbones.
Can anyone recommend any products that might help? Ideally I'd like some reasonably priced skin care products for my almost 50 year old skin. And if it can knock off 10 years even better 🙂
Thank you

The foundations would be
Morning
Cleanser
Vit c serum
Moisturiser
Spf

Evening
Cleanser
Retinol or Tretinoin
Moisturiser

La Roche Posay do good Cleanser and moisturisers. I like a balm one. Illiyoon ceramide is also a great moisturiser

Vit c geek and gorgeous is a good one

Retinol wise I like Dermatica for Tret which increases cell turnover giving a more youthful appearance

Spf - altruist face fluid or beauty of Joesson are my favourites

If you fancy trying Tret here is a referral code to give you money off (and full transparency it gives me a credit)

I've used it for 3 years.

Try personalised skincare for just £2.90, plus £10 off your next month.

Head to www.dermatica.co.uk and checkout with code Y2K0NE

I recommend listening to this. She gives a lovely routine at the end.

(Seems like the Boots serum they mention is highly recommended, I bought it after listening and seems nice so far)

You will get a lot of advice on this board which can get confusing, and this is a fabulous derm talking for free.

Are more expensive face creams worth it?

As an almost 50 year old my routine is exactly as @bryceQ recommended above (including most of the brands). You absolutely don’t have to spend a fortune on cleansers or moisturisers so stick to brands that you’d find in Boots (often on offer) like LRP, Curel, Cerave, Vichy etc. The products that will make the most difference to your skin is retinol / Tretinoin (I also use Dermatica), vitamin c (another Geek & Gorgeous user) and daily sunscreen.

I have minor sun damage (no skincare to speak of before turning 50)and have had good results with La roche Posay niacinamide serum. Quite annoyed that they have now ‘improved’ this product by adding retinol, grr) under Pai vitamin C in the morning and retinal serum at night.

After a few months though with cleanser, moisturiser and sunscreen it all got a bit spendy so I’m now trying the pared back Skin & Me subscription/prescription service. Nothing to report on that yet.

You will get a lot of people offering up their codes for Skin&Me / Dermatica etc as they get £10 off if someone takes them up on it. Your first order is usually under a fiver anyway (mine was £3.50 and I didn’t use anyone’s code), to reel you in.

I hate subscriptions though and miss the lovely Pai products so am thinking of just going back to Pai cleanser, Vitamin C, sunscreen and Retinal and seeing if it at least fends off new pigmentation.

This is fantastic.

Their peels are also excellent.

You can message them with your skin concerns and they are extremely helpful.

Thanks everyone, I'm an absolute novice on skincare so it's very helpful having g it spelled out for me.

I work full time so something quick and simple to stick to is a bonus!

These spots will be from the sun. I'm 40 and for the last nearly 2 years have been wearing full fat suncream everyday including the winter months under my make up. I don't mean moisturiser with SPF in it, I mean actual suncream 50+ factor. I swear by it and my skin is so much healthier. Luckily I hadn't developed any brown (age) spots, but I am fair skinned and freckly. I don't leave the house with suncream on anymore. Not even to the gym lol

chalkyc2 · 25/02/2024 14:09

Can I ask...what exactly do you do with serum?!? I'm a moisturiser morning and evening person only....aged 50....I think I need to start improving my routine 😳
