I have so many clothes - anyone else?

I have a couple of days off work so have been sorting through my clothes and wow, I have so many.

I don’t dare count the actual number but it’s enough to fill two wardrobes, a chest of drawers and a box under the bed for clothes which only get occasional use (holiday dresses, bikinis, wedding guest outfits etc).

I’ve tried to be ruthless and get rid of some but the problem is that I love almost all of them. I’m lucky that I’ve been the same size for around 15 years and since I have so many, very few of my clothes get enough use to get worn out.

The rise of Vinted is just making it worse as I now seem to acquire even more lovely things without spending as much. I mostly buy second hand these days but love shopping for clothes.

Anyone else? I’m torn on what to do and whether I should be trying to reduce my wardrobe or just accept that this is part of who I am and that’s ok (as long as I don’t bankrupt myself in the process).

No matter how many clothes I have I still want more. It's the thrill of the chase/ purchasing of the new so old stuff just won't cut it.

I try only to buy stuff in the sales to cut the cost though.

I have so many clothes. I put on loads of weight when I had my kids (years and years ago!) and can't accept that I won't lose it and go back to how I was. So I still have all of my old clothes and all of my current clothes. I have a wardrobe for 2 different people, basically. A lot of my old clothes were either too expensive for me to get rid of (nothing designer but a lot of Coast, Monsoon etc) or hold sentimental value e.g a few summer dresses I wore on honeymoon. It makes no sense, as if I ever lose weight, I will just go and buy some new outfits anyway.....

Don't worry just enjoy them. As PP said try a year of not buying any more. It's just a year. Give it a go.
And wear them all this year if you don't already. Get a week's worth of outfits out on a clothes rail each week and wear them then if you decide you don't like the outfit after all ditch/donate/sell it. There will always be loads of stuff to buy after a year.

I am old and not in brilliant health and I ought to ditch some stuff, but to be honest it can all go to our local charity shops if I popped my clogs. It wouldnt take my daughters long. And luckily they are neither my size so into large bags and off with them! Till then I won't give myself a headache worrying about too many clothes any more.

Peckhampalace · 25/02/2024 16:15

I had to completely empty all my storage last year and realised how many things I had that I didn't wear.
The true sentimental items got put in a case in the loft. Things I had worn in the last year were mostly kept, the rest were sorted between charity shop and Vinted.
I allow myself to buy new things, but unless they are essential I buy out of the proceeds of Vinted sales. Seems to help me keep my wardrobe to a reasonable size and it's easier to see what I have.

Deathraystare · 28/02/2024 09:11

I certainly have but have already got rid of loads.

I do not believe I am as bad as my mum was though with her mega cardi collection. I tried to get rid of them while she was still alive. "Oh no , that is my summer weight one, no Gwen knitted that for me, no that is winter weight, no I wear that with X, well I only have one that colour! etc etc Mind you she was unhappy when I got rid of 5, yes 5 broken hoovers from the summer house, It was a damp horrible place and sadly she stored her wool there. It was heart breaking to throw away musty smelling wool!

CountryCob · 28/02/2024 09:32

I have quite a lot of clothes I think and agree that I remember not having many as a child that made me feel nice. Storage and being able to access them is an issue but I have some new wardrobes coming and am keen to only have what I can fit in there….

Tatonka · 28/02/2024 09:39

Well, if you love them all, have the room and they fit you what's the problem 😀 Enjoy!

RosyappleA · 28/02/2024 18:32

I struggle with donating them. I get overwhelmed but the second they are out the door and at the charity shop, I don’t miss them one bit. I feel I have more mental space if that makes sense. So I stick with only what I wear often. If I don’t reach for it, it’s out. I keep a nice summer and nice winter occasion outfit.

If you enjoy them great but if you keep buying more, however cheap, there will come a point where they will take over. Sorry to hear about the family illness. I bought for years to fill a void. I finally stopped. Minimalism videos on youtube helped me and taking things slow, like donating just one item a week.

Darklane · 28/02/2024 18:53

I’ve found a new way of recycling any woollies that I’m not madly in love with.
I wear them then, instead of washing them, give them to my tiny dogs as bedding for a week ( they love that) after which they go in the bin 😁

Princessfluffy · 29/02/2024 19:41

Yes I definitely have way too many clothes.
I discovered Vinted last autumn and have sold more than 50 items. I still have a lot more to get rid of.

I have also been buying on Vinted though so I haven't really reduced the number of clothes I have. I do however love getting dressed in the morning as I have so many lovely things to wear. Previously I was happy to stay on my PJs all day if I didn't need to go out.

I really need to sell stuff now without buying more stuff at the same time. Anyone know the secret of this?

IndianSummer78 · 22/03/2024 01:08

@Princessfluffy the secret is to not sell it so you're not entering the websites and tempted to browse. Just donate it.

Time40 · 22/03/2024 02:32

Two wardrobes, a chest of drawers and a box under the bed? Ha! That's nothing - you're just a lightweight, OP! 😀Just enjoy them, and don't worry about it (and buy some more .... )

CharlotteStreetW1 · 22/03/2024 08:44

I have loads, probably because I was a large youngster and getting clothes was no fun at all so I had very few. I'm still plus size but getting clothes is easy peasy now and I'm still making up for it!

My niece is a bit of a yo-yo dieter and is currently the same size as me. I'm about to post some clothes to her - hope she likes my style 😬

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 22/03/2024 08:52

I’m like a few others here. DM was a single child and I didn’t have many clothes and they were commented on. She went to jumble sales but we did have new clothes too. My DM also hates shopping so even as a teenager when we had more money she just didn’t like buying clothes for me though I did have them.

I only really got into clothes in my mid 20s, couldn’t afford too many before but got more interest and an inheritance at 25.

I do wish sometimes I had more control over clothes but it’s so easy, too easy to buy clothes.

I’ve got a large double wardrobe and a huge chest of drawers plus storage for underwear etc. and got clothes stored in the attic which I really need to donate or get rid of.

ViciousCurrentBun · 22/03/2024 09:01

I have a big double wardrobe and half a big chest of drawers. My rule is that’s all the space I have and stuff has to go if I want something new. I have held on to a couple of sentimental items that I will never wear again, fake fur mini skirt from my raving days in the early 1990’s springs to mind.

I donate all my clothes to charity, it’s a good way to donate money and get rid of stuff. I can see why if someone is hard up they sell on vinted etc. Last year year as it’s gift aid so have to inform you they made £120 I mean the effort for me to make £120 and all the faff I can’t be arsed.

Is it a problem? I have a lot of clothes because I love them and really enjoy choosing outfits and thinking about what I want to wear. I remember what it was like when I couldn't afford them and only had one pair of shoes and a couple of outfits. I hated it! If it works for you, it's ok

I am the same! I remember not being able to afford what I want and now I can (within reason of course0 so I try not to stress it.

I too OP have too many clothes - i buy alot second hand but I love them all and enjoy putting outfits together. I figure I am not getting into any debt and only spending what I can comfortably afford so it isn't a problem.
