Any hairdressers around? PPD allergy question

Please can you tell me if having foils will be ok for someone who has just started to have an allergy to PPD?

Am I right in thinking he foils and bleach don't actually touch the skin? My hair is really dark but I have a few greys sprouting everywhere now and don't want to risk using dark on my hair again.

Thanks!

No

No they don't touch the skin, or no it won't be ok?

Don’t mess about with a hair dye allergy, people have even died. I had a small reaction about a decade ago so no more hair dye ever. The hairdresser said it would very likely get worse.

PickledPurplePickle · 22/02/2024 21:26

Don’t risk it

You still need a toner which has ppd sorry

No it won't be ok. I mean there's a small chance it will be ok but no sensible hairdresser would do it as there is also a small chance it could kill you

Technically, if no colour has been placed on or near to the scalp (secured safely by foil) you may be ok. But the toner may be the problem here. I'd speak with Salon Manager or the colour house (eg L'Oréal, Wella) the salon is with, for further clarification before proceeding.

People have died fromm PPD reactions. Its very, very serious and after the first reaction will likely escalate.

No hair dye, ever.

@overthinkersanonnymus I’m watching this thread as I’m in the same boat, allergy to PTD and PPD. I have about 15 to 20 percent grey but it’s very noticeable on dark hair. I’m also older in my late 50s and very conscious of looking like I’m staying dark too long! I went to a reputable salon and saw their colour director who said foils would be an option but I had heard other people say hairdressers wouldn’t go near you if you ever had a reaction. I’ve been lucky so far that it’s been mild skin irritation on skin testing, but obviously I’m aware that could change and I’ve not dyed my hair since with anything containing PPD/PTD. A couple products I’ve used are Tints of Nature Semi Permanent henna cream , this gives a sort of “wash” or slight glaze of colour on grey hair and blends it in. The downside is it doesn’t last very long. But it does give a great shine to hair. The other product I’ve used is French product from Patrice Mullatto Color One which lasts longer more like a Demi permanent it fades but lasts long enough to give a very very slight regrowth on my hair. It’s also expensive at approx £25 per 100ml, depends on how long your hair is. I have long fairly thick one length hair and I use one and a half to two bottles. It also only adds colour to hair so you can’t go lighter and the grey will go one shade lighter than the colour you select for example if you buy a dark brown the grey will be mid/light brown depending on how well your hair accepts colour.
Hope this helps I’m always looking for something that lasts longer and am gutted now that I won’t be able to go lighter really until I get enough grey to have them as highlights by dyeing them
blonde with Patrice Mullatto product !
