Bridesmaids dresses for larger ladies. What looks good? Has anyone ever made them themselves?

My DB is getting married next year and my mum has offered to make the bridesmaid dresses to save money and to get the exact colour that future SIL would like.

They have been thinking about this style or this

I am hoping going to lose weight so that I get back into size 12 - 14. I am 16 at the moment. The other bridesmaids are a quite voluptuous too, no idea if they are dieting or not. At a guess, they are about a size 18 or 20.

What styles would you go for? Would mum be able to make them herself. I am a bit concerned about the strapless dresses, if they would stay up. Don't fancy flashing my norks at our family.

Mum would go to dressmaking classes as it has been a while since she did any dressmaking.

what a nice thing for your mum to do
my bridesmaids were a size 18-20 and a size 14 and their dresses were lovely, I designed them and had a lady make them but they were strapless, sort of, because both of them were happy enough with it

will try and find an example of the style

you wouldn't have to have matching dresses, maybe matching material? what about a V neck design, they're the most flattering for larger chests and also provide cover for bra straps?

purple dress

this one worn by Scarlett johannson looks lovely, v neck, nice length, comes in at the waist then out again and coverage for bra straps?

dizzydixies · 24/03/2008 15:48

you obviously wouldn't need to have so much cleavage on show, I was just trying to give an example of how a dress similar to the ones you were showing didn't need to be strapless

monsoon dress

this one is nice too, they style of it?

Kindereggsurpise · 24/03/2008 15:50

Oh, that looks lovely.

I am a bit worried about the strapless thing. I know I would be worried the whole evening that I was about to pop out of my dress like a christmas cracker.

Even if I do manage to lose weight, I am still rather large of nork and a bit saggy after 2 pregnancys. I really do need a decent bra to hold everything up.

monsoon odelia dress

all of these can be worn with strapped bras and as a larger lady myself I wouldn't be horrified/ self conscious at having to go in a design like them

what does the bride like?

Kindereggsurpise · 24/03/2008 15:52

I think that future SIL is quite keen on stapless.

She is really lovely, not at all bridezilla, but I would not like to go against her wishes.

Thanks, DD. They are great. There are quite a lot of dresses in the V-neck style.

She is even more busty than me, lol so she knows what she is letting us in for. I think she is going for strapless for her dress too.

this one is fab

Kindereggsurpise · 24/03/2008 17:26

That is lovely too, DD.

Just spoke to future SIL, she suggested that all the bridesmaids go out in the summer and try on some different styles to see what suits us best.
