Help me with my large bottom

warmmfeet · 21/02/2024 07:37

Hi all

I'm quite a severe pear shape. My bottom gets bigger a lot faster than my top. Top half is size 10/12, bottom 14.

Can anyone help with suggestions of clothing / outfits that will help me look more balanced? That fit the current trends if poss.

I'm coming out the other side of the baby toddler wilderness years and want to get a few new bits and make more effort with my appearance. But I feel lost where to start.

Thank you 😊

Why do you need to look 'balanced', wht does that mean?

I have no bottom, I look like a man, its horrible. Im a 14 all over

Ive lost a lot of weight and my bottom was only fat, had no shape to it at all and now its gone it looks ridiculous.

Try to embrace that you are shaplely.

Thank you. Im sorry you've had that experience and you miss your curves. Believe me I do try to embrace it.

I just look like two different people on the top and bottom. And my bum isn't all rounded and pert it just looks like a large solid shelf. So what I mean is I'd like to dress to make it look smaller to match the top, or the top to look wider to match the bottom.

I'm a similar shape, OP.

Things that suit me are:

  • tops that are fitted at the waist and flare a little over the hips
  • V neck and sweetheart necklines
  • fit and flare/ skater style dresses
  • dark coloured trousers with bright/ light coloured tops
  • tops with shoulder detail/ tailored shoulders balance out the waist

Basically anything that accentuates the smaller waist/ shoulders and hides the larger legs/ bottom. You want dark colours on areas you don't want to emphasise, and light colours/ patterns on areas you do.

Also I find straight leg trousers/ jeans are much better than skinny/ bootcut/ mom/ wide leg etc.

I'm not sure if that's to do with being a pear shape or just my proportions specifically, but straight leg are the only trousers that work on me. I can get away with leggings and a tunic but it's not my favourite look.

@fritaskeeter thanks that's so helpful ! I'll start having a good look.

I think one of the problems I have is I tend to buy online and really need to just try lots on. Find it hard to make time to shop with such young kids that need all my time!

Hello fellow pear shape.

This is what I do:-

I avoid skinny jeans and treat bootcut with caution. I prefer straight leg. Wide leg can look good too, but again, depends on the fit.

Dark colours on bottom half.

I prefer not to wear heels, but to be honest, they do help.

Boat/bardot necklines are good. Makes your shoulders look broader and therefore balances you a bit.

Horizontal stripes on top half.

Avoid tops/jackets ending at your hips. This was a hard one for me…. It felt counter intuitive. But yes, tucking in my top does look better than it being out. Avoiding hip length jackets is also a good move for me.

This tip isn’t for everyone, but I wear padding in my bras to help even things out.

A line skirts and dresses. With dresses, an A line or full skirt means you can buy to fit your top half.

Belted coats. These help to balance you and accentuate your waist.

With trousers, watch out for pleats and pockets. For example, I bought a lovely pair of wide leg trousers from Next (not jeans). They look really good, even if I do say so myself. This year, they have changed the design very slightly. I ordered some to try and now the pockets are slightly different and stick out. There are also a couple of unflattering pleats. Basically they don’t hang as nicely and they add inches to my hips.

Shapewear. I only wear it on occasion, but hold me in shorts can be handy to smooth things out underneath a skirt or dress.

Another slightly silly tip- I have a theory that bigger hair helps to balance things too.

That’s all I can think of for now. As with anything though, try it on and see. Sometimes an item of clothing looks great even though on paper it shouldn’t be that flattering.

Agree with other people who've said accentuate your waist, avoid tops/jackets end at your widest point (hips).
-Fitted waist and flared/a-line skirt.
-Light top and dark bottoms.
-Skirts that skim the hips before flaring out, rather than having a lot of fabric on waist/hips.
-Those Hush knitted dresses that have a tight skirt and a blouson type top.

  • I find M&S mom jeans work well for me (nipped in waist but more space in hips)
  • Check out 'curve' or 'hourglass' fit jeans from Next, Asos, Hollister, Abercrombie and Fitch. The proportions are made for a small waist/wide hips.

All the above plus plain, dark loose jumpsuits do an amazing job. And some toast trousers.

Superawkward · 21/02/2024 12:16

I have a big bottom, but am more of an hourglass shape. Agree with dark and plain things on the bottom half and something to draw attention upwards. On your top half. I like flare and bootcut jeans, but the cut needs to be just so. Agree with PP about the position of pleats and pockets. Some just make me look even wider! Heels are your friend. Shapewear jeans are also your friend.

Skinny jeans will not do you any favours! Avoid like the plague!

I find with my shape that I need to dress a bit smarter than I'd perhaps like and my clothes need more structure/shape. While I am comfy as hell in a hoodie and baggy jeans, I do not look good in anyway whatsoever in any form of 'leisure wear'

saturnspinkhoop · 21/02/2024 12:34

Totally agree with jumpsuits! I really didn’t think they would work on me, but they are surprisingly flattering.
