We've got a family wedding in a couple of weeks. She hates shopping and is not brilliant at putting outfits together.

I think she would suit a nice trouser suit or trousers with a smart top. I'm going for trousers as although she likes to dress stylishly she wears minging shoes, think hotter/ecco types.

She's 65, short grey hair, apple shaped size 18/20.

if she has bad shoes maybe go for wide legged trews (that will cover the shoes) plus a nice top

i feel uneasy recommending something for a 65yo that i have myself (i'm such a dullarse, obv) but...

this is a really lovely top, v forgiving on those plentiful of tummy

worn with any p[air of structured (i.e. witha pleat) wide legged trousers

i wore it with a big fabric flower and long string of pearls

She sounds the same shape and colouring as my Mum.

She got a lovely wedding outfit from East...i don't know if you have one near you. Basically it was wide legged trousers, a round necked silky top and a long embrodered coat which came down to her kneees. She had a really funky chunky necklace, and looked great. She has to wear 'comfort' shoes too, and got some from Clarks.

The long lines of the coat skimmed all her lumpy bits and she looked really elegant.

wrap/cardigan recommended for a 64yo's arms, i would imagine...

woodenchair · 23/03/2008 21:02

That's a lovely top tutter, but it need tucking in so don't think she would go for it.

I'd though wide leg trousers and a wrap/tie fron cardi with long bits at the front. so think we'll go for something like that. funky necklace is a good idea, she likes jewellery.

Don't have an east nearby, but do have a large M&S so think will head there. hopefully won't be too painful!

doesn't need tucking in - it's kind of elasticated/gathered at the hem

wraps bad for apples - trust me

Maidamess · 23/03/2008 21:20

I think thats a good top for those rounded of tummy. it would give a modern edge to a wedding outfit for an older lady too. I agree wrap tops can be very unforgiving. Something longer and drapier would be better.

woodenchair · 23/03/2008 22:11

ok, will have another look at it.

Think I may have to drag her there and not leave until we have something.

Thanks all

SOme really good advice for apple shapes in the newest Trinny and Susannah book.
www.amazon.co.uk/Body-Shape-Bible-Discover-Transform/dp/0297844547/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&q id=1206368737&sr=8-1
They suggest for smart outfits:
fitted deep scoop neck top and wide trousers with flat front (no pleats or front pockets) with fitted dress coat worn open and
empire patterned top with loose shrug, worn with skirt which matched the shrug and is pleated from the hip not waist in fluid material, worn with elegant wedges and long pendant.
The after pics of the woman with this body type are amazing, she looks really glam.
Some tips here too

Monsoon might be a good place to look, lots of shrugs and dressy things and usually go up to size 18/20.

And meant to say they are some really pretty Gabor flats in Jones/JOhn Lewis/House of Fraser in metallic/pewter colour which look comfy and might work well with trouser suit

Thanks for the replies. I called her last night and told her i was taking her to M&S this afternoon, have just got back.

We ended up with this jacket which is greener than it looks in the picture. She doesn't normally wear green, but it looked nice on
Black wide leg trousers
these shoes
with a greenish necklace.

I almost got her to buy a new bag as well but she said she had enough black bags.

Just hope my dad likes it cos if he doesn't he'll say so and she won't wear it

Very chic. A rich olive green bag would love fab with that outfit.

Maidamess · 24/03/2008 21:23

wooden chair thats a very nice outfit! I'm sure she will look lovely on the day. Good shopping ladies!

moondog · 24/03/2008 21:27

Woodenchair this was more or less the exact fashion challenge in the Telegraph today. Have a look at some of these. You can always take the M&S stuff back!

moondog · 24/03/2008 21:28

lol at minging Hotter shoes.
MIL was addicted to those. Why is that???

woodenchair · 24/03/2008 22:28

I have no idea, even my dad wears them.
there's just nothing stylish about them.

moondog · 24/03/2008 22:34
