Would someone who understands makeup please explain the difference in these three eye palettes please?

I would like a new eye shadow palette for my birthday. Came across these three on an exploratory trip into town this morning.

The Max factor is £11, the Bare Minerals is £30 and the Estée Lauder is £50.

I accept the packaging of the more expensive brands is going to add to the cost, but in terms of what the product is made from and end results on the eyelids, what are the differences between the three?

The more expensive products tend to have a nicer ‘buttery’ texture and are more pigmented

KirstenBlest · 17/02/2024 14:22

Get the Max Factor one.

SparrowFeet · 17/02/2024 15:24

Pigment and texture, so the more expensive stuff in theory will blend better and will be easier to apply. Cheaper eyeshadow has a tendency to look 'chunky' if it's not applied properly whereas more expensive stuff it's harder to go wrong.

That being said if you like the colours of the max factor one then get it. I actually don't think it makes that much of a difference for day to day.

KirstenBlest · 17/02/2024 15:42

I said MF because it it decent stuff and I find with palettes, you end up not using most of the colours, and once you've damaged the case, or the colour gets a bit loose, they look manky.

I prefer having a single colour or two. The Boots No 7 stuff is great IMO.

Lavenderandbrown · 17/02/2024 18:04

The EL one(gold case) does not have the pink shades. The brown looks quite sparkly top upper left….i prefer a matte or very subtle sparkle. The BM palette does not feature the very light cream color seen in the other two. I would go for the palette with least sparkle and a smooth silky not chalky feel on my lid. I like the colors in the BM palette best. The MF is a good entry price point. In 1988 a friend worked for wet
and wild makeup. Germany made almost all the eye pencils at that time. He traveled to the factory and saw EL rolling off the assembly belt. Next up his wet and wild pencils with no change in equipment or formula only tint changes. I think makeup
is a bit more specialized than this today but I always keep this in mind when contemplating between brands and there is a whole IG world out there about dupes. I use BM and like the quality at the price point

I like those shades. The difference is the exact shades, the number of shades, how matt/satin/shimmery they are, and also things like how smoothly they apply and how well they stay on without creasing.

I have that BM one and I like it a lot although I rarely wear eyeshadow these days. I like the shades and I find BM eyeshadows apply well and don't irritate my sensitive eyes.
I've had a similar but different colour MF palette before and it was fine.
I really like EL eyeshadow. My favourite ever eyeshadow was EL (long since discontinued). I think the shades are great and they apply really smoothly with good colour pay off. But I wouldn't pay that much for a palette!

I'd recommend the BM one unless money is no object in which case maybe the EL one.

WhereAreWeNow · 17/02/2024 18:16

Actually, looking at the colours again, even if money is no object, I'd still get the BM one. All of them are beautiful shades.

This is exactly it. EL is really velvety. BM does too. MF is a great brand (especially lipstick) but I don't think the eyeshadow is in quite the same league.

ohididntrealise · 17/02/2024 18:19

Interested to read the replies as I have the Max Factor one.

As with all palettes, I don't use all the colours. I'm happy enough with it, wouldn't really have crossed my mind to go more expensive tbh.

I will pay for more expensive foundation and mascara....lipsticks and eyeshadows and blushers I stick to the cheaper brands.

Not really sure why. Would like to try the more expensive ones, I just worry if I don't like the shade etc I've wasted a lot of money.

Shopper727 · 17/02/2024 18:40

Estée Lauder is lovely, and I use nice eyeshadow however I wouldn’t pay £50 for that. There are lots of places that do those big palettes like morphe that are lovely and half that price. No7 is nice too, you could get a eyeshadow and something else for your money.

This, plus staying power. You usually get what you pay for with makeup (bar mascara).

I've always been a massive make up snob which is stupid really but these days it's really only top end foundations I spend a lot on. As for eye shadow pallettes - I've yet to find anything better than Morphe - and I may or may not, to my shame - have tried every single brand in existence. Packaging is basic, but pigment wise - fab. This one looks like the right shades by the original post - PLUS it's £6.72. Which by my very perfect girl maths - means you've got £43.78 to spend on something else 🙌.

I have this one from YSL that I bought when Boots had a beauty event so reduced. https://www.yslbeauty.co.uk/makeup/eyes/eye-shadow/couture-mini-clutch/WW-51079YSL.html?dwvar_WW-51079YSL_color=babylone_roses

That's a beautiful palette. I get over with morphe stores, but might have a look next time I'm round there

OrangeCrusher · 17/02/2024 19:15

Max Factor make up is decent quality. BM is usually very good, it blends and lasts well. Estate Lauder make up, other than the foundation, eye liners and lipsticks are not worth it.

if you’re looking for an eyeshadow avoid Chanel, it won’t last. Charlotte Tilbury the Sophisticate is the very best every day pallette. Anastasia Beverly Hills have great eyeshadows. They relaunched a smaller version of the Sultry palette which is great. Or, have a look at Natasha Denona Glam palette.

I've got a couple of Revolution eye palettes. They were pretty cheap and, like their blush palettes, are very pigmented.
