Clothes You Don’t Love Anymore

Do you hang on to them, if they are not really good enough to sell, and do you wear them?

I have a few jumpers that kind of shrunk but OK to WFH, nice bright colours. But I feel ugly in them, and wasteful to replace…

I wear them for Zoom meetings. Get rid of the ones you hate.

If not good enough to sell, give to charity.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 16/02/2024 21:48

I never sell clothes. I give them away- either to someone who will get the use of them or to charity. I gave away masses of smart office wear to the daughters of a friend - stuff was way beyond their pockets but it wasn't going to fit me again.

I gave a full length black velvet coat to my son's girlfriend last year. The girlfriend before her got a haul of Cath Kidston dresses.

Don't keep anything that makes you feel bad when you wear it.
I regularly have a cull

Try not to hang on. Life is too short to wear clothes you don't enjoy wearing and I think a decluttered wardrobe is calming (and makes me buy less) so I shift them out.

If clothes are good enough, they go to charity shops/clothing banks and my old cashmere jumpers go to Turtle Doves who send me gloves in return. I also keep an old but warm jumper in the boot of my car in case of emergencies/breakdown. If I need to stay at an airport hotel the night before flying, I will wear old undonatable clothes (e.g. tatty underwear) there so I just bin afterwards. Cotton stuff becomes old cleaning rags. A local animal shelter might want clothes for bedding and a friend of mine has composted clothes successfully - natural fibres cut up into small bits.

I'd love to be a crafter and make quilts etc- maybe when I retire.

? What will they do with them if they're not good enough to sell?

thedevilinablackdress · 18/02/2024 01:21

OP, I know what you mean. I hate waste too, but feeling crappy every time you or something on is no fun. Maybe put the jumpers away for a while and see if you still feel the same about them next winter.

If not good enough to sell, give to charity.

If they're not good enough to sell, keep one for dirty-work/gardening and the rest in textile recycling. I've composted completely moth-eaten cashmere, or given it as pet-bedding.

Charities are not a dumping site for ruined garments.

I tend to end up with a drawer full of "dog walking clothes" that include my "I wouldn't go into town in that again" collection of bobbled jumpers, trousers with small stains or worn heels that can be tucked into walking boots, hoodies with nice long arms... Clothes that you can come home and clean the bath in without worrying if it stains.

That's fine to have a few 'past it' clothes that can be repurposed.

And clothes should have a long life, I get mine repaired or altered.

Sometimes though, you have to say goodbye.

@ReadyForSeason just keep a few. Don't carry on wearing things that you've ruined. That will just make you sad.

Do learn to launder though so it doesn't happen again!
