Is this too casual for a wedding dress?

Hi all, I'm really not a dress person so I'm struggling with the idea of a full blown wedding dress. When I do wear a dress in tends to be knee length, V neck chiffon type dresses. I found this on JJs House and quite like it, but is it too casual? What would you do for bridesmaids dresses if you wore this style as the bride? TIA.

It is not your traditional wedding dress due to the length. It your day, surely you can do as you please?

This is suitable for a beach wedding in a hot country, but would look very odd in the UK in a church. What sort of ceremony do you have planned?

Sorry should've said. We're going for registry office ceremony + local village hall reception.

In which case I think you can be a little bit less traditional and this could look lovely- the last registry office wedding I went to the bride wore a floor length fitted fawn coloured lace wedding dress. I'd match the shorter length in the bridesmaids dresses.

Your wedding, you decide what is appropriate! I wore jeans and a pea coat. I’ve seen everything from work clothes (quickie lunch break wedding) to a vaguely medieval kirtle and cloak. Anything, imo, looks more interesting that the hoary old ‘sleeveless white dress with wide or fishtail skirt’ vibe.

That dress is v pretty.

sweetpickle2 · 19/06/2024 09:33

Its your wedding, wear what you like!

For bridesmaids I'd probably just make sure they were in short dresses too.

Trickedbyadoughnut · 19/06/2024 09:35

I think it's lovely - better to have something you feel comfortable in. I got married in a church in a pale pink knee-length dress and still felt a bit over-dressed as it was still out of my comfort zone!

LetsAllOvercomeOurFears · 19/06/2024 09:36

It’s absolutely gorgeous and a fresh take on a wedding dress. Your bridesmaids could have something mid calf and simpler in a deep colour?

Snerl · 19/06/2024 09:42

I think it's stunning. I wanted a more casual wedding dress but was talked into a traditional semi-meringue. It was still a beautiful dress, the day went without a hitch, and we're happily married 16 years on. But it wasn't "me" and I always feel a little pang of regret when I look at my wedding photos or see someone getting married in a beautiful non-traditional outfit.
If you wear this OP (please do!) I would put the bridesmaids in a similar style/length but in different colours.

Echobelly · 19/06/2024 09:45

I think it's really nice, lovely for a small venue/registry - would only look less appropriate in a church or fancy hotel/country house.

I got married in a blue, calf-length bridesmaids dress - venue was a barn. Like you, I didn't want a bridal dress. I'd been to a ball at uni and I knew I just couldn't 'move' nicely in something long and formal, it was really unnatural for me and I felt I'd look like 'me dressed up as a bride' not 'me getting married' and I have never regretted not having a big or spectacular dress.

I think @Barleysugar86 may have missed a memo! More and more brides are choosing to swerve long wedding gowns and choosing something more individual and reflective of their own style. Yours is perfectly fine - but nothing is ‘too casual’ - it’s your day, you’re free to have the wedding you want, dressed as you like.

This might be reassuring:

It’s lovely and fine and it’s your wedding anyway so wear what you please!

I much prefer shorter wedding dresses to the hideous big long meringue fishtail and sleeveless monstrosities.

went to a lovely relaxed wedding recently where the bride (who lives in trousers usually) wore a cream jumpsuit which was plain (eg. No pattern or frills) and it was simply STUNNING! And very ‘her’. She seemed comfortable so I’d go with your own vibe for your special day. Congratulations!

ErrolTheDragon · 19/06/2024 09:58

I think that's one of the nicest wedding dresses I've seen on here. As the thread is from February the op may have already chosen and could be married by now!

LemonySnickets · 19/06/2024 10:00

I had something very similar for my registry office wedding. It was red though! Grin

MetaDaughter · 19/06/2024 10:01

I noticed the OP date, but so many people plan their weddings more than a year ahead, it seemed worth replying to!

Guess the thread might be encouraging for other brides, anyway.

HeddaGarbled · 19/06/2024 10:04

I think it’s lovely and perfect for the sort of ceremony and reception you have planned. For bridesmaids, I think similar length and style but in a colour (not too pale, so that your white dress stands out).

MetaDaughter · 19/06/2024 10:13

Interesting that the brand the OP chose her dress from doesn’t offer any mini length dresses in their own Bridesmaid section. But the OP could have found some amongst their normal dresses. Or looked elsewhere.
