Boring question about handwashing.

I have to wash cashmere and handwash jumpers every week. But my cashmere and jumpers have holes in them. I’m wondering if it’s the way I’m doing it.

Does anyone use the handwash function on their machine? Does it work?

My machine has wool and delicate cycles. I'm not quite sure of the difference, but I can confirm the cashmere goes through the wool wash absolutely fine. (I detest handwashing, so made sure I had a machine which would do it for me.)

Where are the holes?

UnctuousUnicorns · 13/02/2024 10:53

Do you put them in a zipped net bag for protection in the washing machine?

FailedNoSpend2024Already · 13/02/2024 10:56

If the holes are round the belly button, it’s the wool rubbing against your trousers or belt.

Put them in a washing net, and wash alone on wool wash.

I buy wool thread in the colour of my jumper from a haberdashery and darn the holes.

Are you washing the same cashmere weekly? I don’t think it needs it. Always wear it over another layer. I’d only wash it before being packed away after winter.

My machine has a delicate/ handwash/ wool/ and even a steam.
Used them all ..
Perfect.

This, wash your cashmere as minimally as possible, it's naturally antibacterial, there really is no need for frequent washing. Hang it out to air after you've worn it, give it a quick steam if you like.

The holes are probably clothes moths

Hand wash cycle on the machine will be more delicate than hand washing them yourself. Use a specific wool detergent. Store them in bags with moth repellent. The holes do sound like the moths have got to them already though.

Why are you washing cashmere, or any wool for that matter, so often?

mynameiscalypso · 13/02/2024 22:19

I always wash jumpers, including cashmere, on the washing machine on the wool or delicate cycle. But I also wash them very infrequently, only really when I have to because I've managed to spill food down them...

brogueish · 13/02/2024 22:20

Why are you washing weekly? That seems excessive for a top layer. I do wash mine on a wool cycle when needed, but also just hang knits outside on a sunny day - obviously not a substitute for cleaning but good to air them. Any moths will also drop off in sunshine.

I agree with others about washing less often. Smooth it out when you take it off, so that your body heat helps set the fabric.

The holes could be caused by buttons, belts, or seat belts. Hopefully not moths.
