Hi, wondering if anyone fancies helping me pick out some new clothes?

Ideally from Vinted!

I'm 5'4, always used to be a 14 but now easily a 16. Big bum and boobs (which i like and don't mind showing off), used to have a waistline but that's hiding. Hair getting more and more grey, greeny hazel eyes, very pale Irish skin.

I work in tech, so no dress code but want to have a few options to meet clients so smart casual. Most people are in their 20/early 30s, I'm early 40s.

Things that look good on me - wrap/tunic dresses and (high heeled boots)
Wide leg trousers
Long or 3/4 length sleeves
Slash necks
Scarves

Things i wish looked good on me -
Jeans (can't find wider leg ones that look smart ish and straight/skinny leg don't really look good)
Shirts (always think i look frumpy)
Tight tops.

Things I'm not keen on
V necks
The current calf length billowy dresses

Also generally no clue about fashion. Layer ideas would be great.

Oh, and I really don't want thin plastic materials. The better quality the better. I go for Vinted for sustainability reasons

Grateful for any links for outfits I could put together!

Forgot to suggest colours.. I love bright things, grey tends to wash me out but heavy tweedy grey trousers would be fine.

Earthy greens, russets, wine, bright or navy blue, teal, purple.

I love mustard but it doesn't love me.

Even though you think you don’t like them, this shape of dress, in this colour, would be gorgeous on you and would look properly contemporary and fresh.

One more suggestion - for colour (and the coolest, relaxed looking shapes) seek out American Vintage:

https://www.americanvintage-store.com/gb/en/

I’m sure there’s lots available pre-owned. You may want to filter for natural materials - some of their most colourful knitwear is not pure wool - but their clothes can make people unfathomably chic and not old fashioned.

Yowsers, thanks for those suggestions but definitely not me.

I think I'm going for something more classic rather than current if that makes sense.

Totally agree on the hair comment though!

‘Classic’ = out of date. And not in a good way.

Helpmedress3 · 12/02/2024 23:12

Ok, timeless perhaps. Maybe this is the wrong place to be asking 🙈

If you want smart jeans, I got some lovely flared ones from Marks and Spencers recently - they look smart on. I'll find a link.

Everyone on MN seems to love oversized and wide clothing which is awful if you have an hour glass figure. Structure, form fitting on the top half and shape is what an hour glass shape needs.

Helpmedress3 · 13/02/2024 07:28

Love those jeans! Definitely a good starting place.

Looking at your photo, I thought a couple of things: shirts which are not fitted and sleeves past the elbows, not above. I also think that white shirt is too long for you as it kind of messes with your proportions and a standard length one would look better.

SuperPug · 13/02/2024 07:58

Some of the suggestions are a little unusual and you have great hair. Honesty, I’m not a massive fan of buying on vinted as the items I bought were stained/had body odour on them but realise it can be totally different.
Have you looked at Outnet? They have DvF wrap dresses at the moment, ££ but cost per wear could be better instead of something a lot cheaper? What is your budget?

BobnLen · 13/02/2024 08:08

Fatface Elise jeans are a good wider leg style.

It most definitely is, if you want anything not oversized and baggy. Posters will gather to point and laugh at your temerity in wanting to wear anything "flattering". It's the worst thing you can do.

Classic certainly does not mean out of date! Not every new trend suits everyone.

Helpmedress3 · 13/02/2024 08:21

This makes me laugh!

Ok so it's a big no to oversized and shapeless for me. I'm not cool enough, and will just look like I'm wearing curtains.

Also, I'd really like to make the most of my figure rather than hide it.

Suggestions for a (non transparent) white shirt to wear with smart jeans, that actually fits over boobs, anyone?

And what would work for my feet with that outfit for business meetings (shlepping round London and occasional building sites)

And how about shirt dresses with belts? I've seen some lovely ones on 6ft size 10 models, but what works on short and curvy?

I can;t even make any useful suggestions as nearly everything in the shops is a baggy overpriced sack. I get my wide leg trousers from M and S, Zara and Cos though. For tops, have a look at Saint and Sofia? Not the hideous one on the thumbnail. Shop Women's Tops | Saint + Sofia® UK (saintandsofia.com)

I am curious as to how Vinted works. Can you actually get the suggestions above on Vinted in your size, when you want them?

OMG! Cardinal S and B sin. You are going to have to name change and leave before the mob turns up with pitchforks.

stickybear · 13/02/2024 08:33

I have a lovely thick cotton white shirt from Seasalt. It's longer length and slightly oversized so it looks current, but has a nice shape to it so I don't feel swamped. I wear it for work with straight dark jeans or with wide leg black trousers and boots.

Ha! At least in the shock and anger I'm causing, I'm finding solidarity with others!

It’s hard to find fitted shirts that fit when you have a larger bust, but you like a challenge, right?

Boden do a few ‘fitted’ plain shirts, haven’t tried them myself but might be worth a look.

Bravissimo / Pepperberry made clothing for large bust - they’re no longer doing this, but they still come up on Vinted/eBay.

Another brand is Pour Moi, a poster in another thread mentioned recently, again haven’t tried.

Also Fairlie Curved - I don’t like many of their styles but there are a few basics.

Agree with @Cocacolacarrie that fitted on your top half is the way to go. I have an hourglass figure and usually achieve the fitted on top look by buying things that have a shaping at the waist, with elastane content so there’s some extra room from the stretch, and sizing up a bit. I’ve got to know the brands I can do this with. You need things to fit on your shoulders if possible.
